JAN 19TH Doomsday for Broadway and Off Broadway theater?
Everything is closing:
Hairspray
Grease
Young Frankenstein
Spring Awakening
Forbidden Broadway
Spamalot
Boeing Boeing
Mindgame
Gypsy- (March)
All that is left is Disney. It is very sad. I wish something could be done to save these shows. I will especially miss Hairspray, Spring Awakening and Forbidden Broadway but loved all of these shows. We are living in sad times. All the good, campy shows are dying and all that is left are children shows.
Shrek
Lion King
Little Mermaid
Mary Poppins
It is a very sad time indeed.

OH MY GOD BROADWAY IS DYING AAAAAAAAAUGH
Shut up. There's still good shows left, more are coming. And come on - Grease and Young Frankenstein are just as bad as the "bad" shows you mentioned, which aren't really that bad at all.

Billy Elliott is a blessing.
Hoping that AVE Q will stay open past January.
I was not a fan of Grease but I hate to admit I liked Young Frankenstein a lot, even if I only saw it once. Loved, Shuler and the putting up with **** Forbidden skit is hilarious.
PS Liza's show is only a few weeks so it wont be around either.
And, it is a very expensive ticket and I wont be seeing it.
I would love to see LIZA but there is no lottery.

I wish Liza would extend and have an inexpensive first row lotto.
I have never seen her live except once at a benefit a few years ago. She is super talented and I love the Forbidden Broadway skit. The LIZA one note number is hysterical.
PS She is terrific. So is the woman in FORBIDDEN BROADWAY singing I'm Liza one note.

God of Carnage will have an American cast - Riedel reported James Gandolfini and Marcia Gay Harden, although I don't know if they have been confirmed. Ralph Fiennes apparently decided not to do it, and Janet McTeer will be here in Mary Stuart instead. Not sure who they are looking at for the other couple in the play.

Corine, seriously, when is the last time you paid to see a show?
It is kind of silly to beg people PAY to go see these shows so you can go see them again for free. Have you seen everything playing? What about Seagull? Bounce Redux? Equus? Dividing the Estate? August:Osage County? A Man for All Seasons? Streamers or What's That Smell? Or are those shows not "campy" enough for you?

Sue,
I have seen most of the shows you talk about. I paid to see "WHAT'S THAT SMELL" and it was funny for about 30 minutes and then it really stunk. It was a funny one joke show which is a shame. I love the star and writer of the show but What's That Smell is a bomb.
I loved August Osage County but once was enough as it is over three hours and if I want to see a dysfunctional family all I have to do is call my relatives.
PS SUELEEN,
I pay thousands of dollars a year on theater tickets. I paid to see DUST last night off Broadway. I paid to see Harvey's first night back a few weeks ago. I paid to see Forbidden Broadway this week. Why do you think I don't pay? I pay for a lot of things. PR people offer me tickets for a limited amount of days and many times I can't go when they offer dates so I buy my own tickets. Last year I spent $4,000 on show tickets.

All that is left is Disney.
Wait -- Jersey Boys, Phantom, Chicago, Mamma Mia, South Pacific and Wicked are Disney shows? Thanks for the revelation!

I don't think the Disney shows suck at all!
I mean I'd still pay to watch Knight Usnavi of the Bodega Realm save the princess Vanessa who's locked up in the Heighest Fire Escape in the Kingdom of Washington, wouldn't you?

I loved the 39 STEPS and have seen it three times. Paid for it twice.
PS I never said I did not like Disney shows. I love Disney shows but would not want to see them multiple times.
Beauty and The Beast was my favorite Disney show which sadly closed. I also adore Lion King. Not a fan of Mary Poppins but I liked The Little Mermaid. I love the music.

Just a thanks to the people who made some lists. My friends and I get into NYC for about 10 days starting Jan 15th and since we haven't figured out what we're seeing exactly yet, it's very helpful to see all our options in the one place. *copies down all the shows to better prepare own list*
And yes I know we picked rather a bad time. xD

"I have never seen her live except once at a benefit a few years ago"
soo i guess that means...you've seen her live?
#22re: CLOSINGS- WHAT WILL BE LEFT TO SEE AFTER JANUARY 18TH?
Posted: 12/6/08 at 8:28pmYes. I worked as a runner at a show a few years ago when I could run. She was in the benefit and I watched her from backstage. She was fab.

... She did, and from what I understood, she does.

all I have to say to every thread about Broadway dying is this...
yes, many shows are closing. yes, a lot of people are out of jobs. this is the natural cycle of things. new shows are coming, and maybe, MAYBE...some of them will be awesome. maybe, just maybe, new, quality shows will surface. we're not all going to die, so just chill out, Chicken Little.
