A musical stage adaptation of Siân Heder's Academy Award-nominated film CODA is in the works. Vendôme Pictures and Pathé Films, producers of the 2021 film, are partnering with Deaf West Theatre (the company behind the acclaimed Broadway revivals of Big Riverand Spring Awakening) to translate the property to the stage.

I was waiting for this to be announced; seems like a total no-brainer!

Ditto. It's a great property to be musicalized, and Deaf West is the right place to do it. And the film is absolutely wonderful, for those who haven't seen it on Apple TV+

What a great and lovely idea.  Having Deaf West build a show from the ground up, as opposed to augmenting and stylizing an existing musical for their deaf performers!  And this seems like the perfect source material!

I loved this movie and everything about it.

Can somebody please cast David Bedella as Mr. V and Kathryn Gallagher as Ruby?

Oh look, a bibu!

It's kind of a pipe dream, but I'd love to see Emilia Jones reprise her role.

I saw this coming, and quite pleased that it is happening. It must be noted that Deaf West had a hand in finding deaf actors for the film.

Emilia Jones is lovely and talented, but Kathryn is perfect for the Deaf West production.

Deaf West Theatre will kick off its 2024-25 season with a production of Green Day's American Idiot in collaboration with Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles. Directed by CTG’s Artistic Director Snehal Desai, the production begins previews October 2, opening October 9 and running through November 10 at the Mark Taper Forum. The show will feature choreography by Jennifer Weber and American Sign Language (ASL) choreography by Colin Analco and Amelia Hensley.

Deaf West, which both adapts existing works and develops original works through the lens of Deaf culture, has a slate of other pieces in development as well, including a musical adaptation of CODA, the 2022 Academy Award-winning Best Picture; Wonderstruck, a stage adaptation of the novel by Brian Selznick; Elephant Shoes, a contemporary musical version of Cyrano de Bergerac set in the world of big tech, starring Daniel N. Durant (CODA) and directed by Jeff Calhoun; and Sense and Sensibility, adapted from the Jane Austen novel by Kate Hamill and directed by Sarna Lapine.

"As Deaf West continues to expand its repertoire of world-class theatrical productions, it's incredibly exciting to witness the passionate progress of so many projects," said Deaf West Artistic Director DJ Kurs in a statement. "Our mission is to build a bridge between the Deaf and hearing worlds, fostering accessibility for deaf audiences and creating opportunities for deaf artists. In this pivotal moment for inclusion and new voices in the industry, we are proud to be at the forefront, leading the charge for greater representation."

Wonderstruck would be interesting to see adapted to the stage.

Wasn't there a stage adaptation of The Invention of Hugo Cabrer announced a few years back?

I was surprised to see so little about this. Happen to be in LA and staying across from the Taper/Ahmanson so seems like a no brainer.

Any new about this?
