My thought is that if the actors aren't playing their instruments, the revival orchestrations are going to be too minimal and weak for Radio City Music Hall.
Isn't that what acoustics and sound systems are for? If it were really a matter of power, then they could double the parts on the new arrangements or something.

I don't know... But I don't mean physical power only.

I'm sure they could have figured out the orchestrations if they had to. I really don't understand either why they can't at least play the revival orchestrations, it just doesnt make sense.
It feels like they are just throwing up their hands with the show's whole situation by doing this.
Yeah, well, maybe the show wouldn't be in this situation if all those claiming to be fans of the show had actually bought a ticket to see it.

I'd rather have them air some B-roll footage than this. I love watching the Tonys because I never get to see any of the shows (I live in Georgia) until they tour, and then the cast is different than who I've fallen in love with on the CD. The Tonys always give me my chance to get and idea of what the show is like, and this will ruin that for me, and I was REALLY looking forward to Company's performance. Now all I'll have to enjoy this new "Company" with is the preview video here and some shaky vids on THAT site. It's not only unfair to the great cast and to Miss Campbell, it's also a really ****ty thing to do to those of us who don't get to see the shows and rely on the Tonys to let us feel included in all the fun.
How much did that talk-show performance cost? Even that managed to give off a feel for the show without going all out with costumes and set decorations (and archestrations, which were scaled down to piano and sax for it). This plan they've got is just...sickening. There's no way it'll tour, now! I'll have to invest in a slightly-less-than-legal video if I ever want to see it...

Honestly, if you all don't like it, then stop seeing the show and pray it closes before the Tonys and maybe they won't perform at all. Jeez! Armageddon is not yet upon us...
Somehow, I think this is merely a rumor, and it's not going to actually happen.

I'd heard from a VERY good source that the show was closing first week of June regardless (this was pre Tony noms...)
E
Doesn't it have to stay open until June 10th to get a performance?
Yes, which is why I'm doubting Eric's "VERY good" information. The producers wouldn't be making public decisions as to what song to sing, whether to let the cast perform, whether to let Raul play the piano, which orchestrations to use, etc. if they were already planning to close pre-Tonys.
FIrst of all it is false advertising.
I hope Tunnick just says "NO".
And it can't help the way other actors already feel about
Miss Thing.

My source is very good--not necesarily the info
Is that a new rule? *thinks back to shows like SideShow*
Silly me, as a journalist, I thought good info is what made a source "good" in the first place.

Wow--I didn't know this was a place where only journalistic facts could be printed. This source (who is close with Raul's soon to be ex) hasn't been wrong before with Company is all I meant. I hope it doesn't close then and I really didn't think some people would be so bitter towards me for repeating it. Sorry sheesh
E
Which "soon to be ex"
Wife or one of his BF's?
Raul's soon-to-be ex? Shouldn't we keep private matters like that off of here?
"I think that if enough Tony voters hear about this, it could hurt Company's chances at winning Best Revival."
Is this because it'll be bringing attention to the show's failing? The voters are seeing the revival's orchestrations, not the one's supposedly being presented at the Tony's. Hopefully this decision won't affect the voter's decision on whether or not this show will win Best Revival.
Quite honestly, I would rather see Raul really act the song and belt it out without the hinderance of weak orchestrations and his uncertainty with the piano.
Raul's comfort level with the piano playing has, no doubt, gotten greater since I saw it in previews, but I can't help but still base my opinion off of that performance.
To see raul sing "Being Alive" during the show was breathtaking - despite the fact that I thought he was hindered by everything around him.
To see and hear Raul sing "Being Alive" in it's full, uninterrupted, original form gives me chills. I can't wait to see it.
If he can talk about his wife and boyfriend in the New York Times, we can certainly discuss them here.
"I didn't know this was a place where only journalistic facts could be printed."
When something is in question, there's always some poster who hears from a "reliable" source what is really supposed to happen, if that makes sense. It's how rumors start. No one is saying your right or wrong, but an official printed source is more trusting than someone coming on here and saying they heard something.
Raul's probably gotten better at the part, but I think Bobby is supposed to look like he's hesitant and having trouble.
Raul's no pianist, but I'd assume much of the uncertainty is acted.
right. that was my take of it, too. he methodically looked like he was trying to have a hard time at the piano.
it did kind of remind me of a grandma at the computer moment though: get her off that thing! is all i kept thinking through the whole intro of the song.
i understand where munk is coming from but i'd still appreciate seeing it the way i saw it on stage

I was wondering the same thing, but it obviously has to do with the politics of the situation and not the actual performance. I mean it's not like Tony voters are seeing him perform Being Alive for the first time AT the awards. The whole situation just seems tacky

"tacky" is the word for it!
whoever made this decision should be ashamed of themselves.

I hope this means that he wins the Tony! But I bet it means that John Doyle doesn't win best director if they don't feature his directions in the Tonys.
