Tonight, Wednesday, January 2nd, the evening performance of the well-acclaimed revival of Cyrano de Bergerac, starring Kevin Kline in the title role, Jennifer Garner as Roxane and Daniel Sunjata as Christian de Neuvillette, was taped for the Great Performances series of PBS. David Leveaux was at the theatre as well.
Didn't know this until I got there, with the trailer outside the stage door, cameras all around the orchestra and mezzanine levels, notices upon entering the Richard Rodgers, and an announcement prior to curtain (yeah, before that "this production features the use of swords and weapons" thing).
So happy this wonderful production will be preserved and presented to more audiences! Really excited to be there. The spotlight even passed by me when it was "looking for" Cyrano in the boxes.

I didn't know this was even being considered...
WOO HOO!
Wow, that is awesome news!
...and from Stacey and I -- you're all welcome.
Enjoy the broadcast when it airs.
Ah, that's great! I won't be able to see it live, so this is a wonderful alternative.

OH MY GOD. This is THRILLING news!!!!
I was there tonight too!
And I was thrilled to hear this before the show began.
Jennifer Garner was magnificent, but I did feel bad for her, as toward the end of Act II, she flubbed a line, and about five minutes later knocked over a chair by mistake, and then when she came out for her first curtain call, she tripped over her dress and fell!
Eek. And on the night they were taping!
But the show is wonderful, and the cast was uniformly brilliant.
Ehh. I'd rather they filmed something else, but I guess filming a play is a little more on the cheaper side. Will it air sometime in 2009, maybe? Lord knows we've waited long enough for Company.

YAHOO! I am so happy that this show will be recorded, I wanted to see it so bad, but I never got the chance.

WBAF, Jennifer said "it's the leaves," citing she's tripped a couple of times because of the pieces. She lost a button, too, during one of her hugs with Christian in Act II. They kept on looking at it somehow!
It's time that they film a play for Great Performances. I'm not complaining about musicals and operas though; had fun seeing Eugene Onegin, The Magic Flute and Il Trittico on PBS-HD last night!
Wow, this is quite exciting. Can't wait for the DVD.
YES!!!! I wanted to see this live badly but couldn't afford to and had no time to get up there to see it....
Touch-ups were done after the performance and not just Jennifer's moments.
Also, Jennifer's curtain call entrance was re-shot, but the rest of it is from the actual curtain call.

This is amazing!!! I hope to God that this is a revival for Gret Performances.
beingjeremiah- thanks for the update !
This is indeed GREAT NEWS! More power to PBS station, that's why we should probbably consider donating money to our local PBS station bec. they do these great shows like Jerry Herman documentary, Company Revival.. and so many great performances..
Any donations will work, sometimes If i am short with cash.. I give $25.00.. any contribution will work... if you dont have any money... you can always volunteer your time for PBS to call people at home... Such a great station !
New Year -great time to contribute to our local PBS ! or you can always donate $$ to our local PBS station in Boston (WGBH)

I was there last night too - sat next to one of the cameramen. He told me they were filming 3 performances. Might be changing camera positions, etc. for the different shows. I asked him if they were going to be editing the 3 shows together, and he said probably not due to differing energy levels, etc - he also thought they wouldn't be using last night's show. I thought Kevin Kline was amazing, but it did seem as if Jennifer Garner had a bit of an off night, especially in the second act.
Not trying to beat an old horse but PBS does NOT film any of these. They are not responsible for the filming of John Doyle's COMPANY or even this WORDS & MUSIC BY JERRY HERMAN documentary.
These are filmed and produced by private companies and PBS only distributes them. They air them as part of their Great Performances series, but that's it.
If anyone needs to be contacted is all the private producers who film these -- THEY are the ones who fund these filmings -- PBS doesn't. PBS doesn't have the funds to do this and have stated this countless of times when contacted about them filming GREY GARDENS before it closed.
so exciting!!!

And doesn't the contract for Great Performances only allow for a very limited of broadcasts (2-3?) and no DVD sale? I know that's been the case in the past, so everyone just make sure that their DVR/Tivo/VHS/DVD recorder is properly set.
Some "Great Performances" have wound up on DVD, so I think it's more about the individual contracts with the producers and the production (and the home entertainment distributor). I don't think it has anything to do with PBS, and as Margo pointed out, they have limited broadcasting rights.
So, unless you know FOR SURE it will be made available on DVD at a later date... best to record it!
so there's no confusion? no air date yet as of now....
