I don't know if Adele can act, but I'd love to hear her sing As Long As He Needs Me. And she is just the right age.

Adele? Err, aren't these people having trouble finding enough to eat, though?

My casting choices:
Fagin: Rowan Atkinson
Nancy: Samantha Barks
Bill Sykes (please don't hate me nor this choice): Russell Crowe

I think Martin Short would be terrific as Fagin, but I don't expect his name to be in the mix. After Les Miserables, I don't want Crowe near another musical, although he'd undoubtedly be better as Sikes than he was as Javert. Maybe Christian Bale as Sikes?

Completely unnecessary remake and I think it would likely flop. The original is so loved and I don't think there's an appetite for a new version of an old show.
But I do think Christian Bale is an inspired choice for Bill Sykes
Samantha Barks is a strong contender as Cameron loves her but I'd suspect studios would want an a - lister so I'd say Amy Adams or Emily Blunt

Isn't Nancy supposed to be 16? I think Amy and Emily would be way too old for Nancy

Cameron Mackintosh Confirms New Oliver! Movie...
Where?
In BWW's article, all it says is "Bourne told the Guardian: "We're reviving The Car Man - based on Carmen. There's also a film of Oliver! in the pipeline. Cameron Mackintosh is hoping to follow up LES MISERABLES with Oliver! and I've never really worked on a major film so that's exciting."
So that's neither confirmation, nor from Cameron Mackintosh. I did look on The Guardian's website, but I couldn't see anything there about it.

I thought she was meant to be in 20s but regardless, it's based on the musical and they could technically go for any age. The role can work when played by many ages. Someone in their teens with box office clout, the acting talent and able to sing would be near impossible to find.
If she can sing Jennifer Laurence might work or emma stone

"Maybe Christian Bale as Sikes?"
Didn't Christian Bale openly state that he's never gonna do another musical ever again?
As for Russell, I'd beg to differ if I were you...

I was thinking the same thing. I didn't see a confirmation from Cameron Mackintosh anywhere in that article, nor a confirmation from Bourne. Saying a film is in the pipeline is not the same as saying the film will be made, and Matthew Bourne saying anything is not the same as Cameron Macintosh saying it. Looks like this confirmation is just more shoddy BWW journalism.

Following up Les Mis with a remake of a Best Picture winner is... bold.

To be fair, the BWW headline is "Matthew Bourne & Cameron Mackintosh Are Bringing OLIVER! Back to the Big Screen!", which isn't quite as bad. It's the title of this thread that brings it to the next level. Chinese whispers, I guess.

Nancy should be in her 20s, so Adams is clearly too old. Not sure if Blunt has a big enough voice for Nancy. Lady Gaga as Nancy?

Amy Adams is the same age as Christian Bale, your Bill Sykes - 40 - so it could be plausible. Fair's fair.

Nancy was in her mid thirties in the original movie and looks younger. I wouldn't say age is of too much importance to this role.

Can't he just concentrate on pushing the Miss Saigon movie into fruition instead of playing about with Oliver? I know which I'd rather sit through.

I'd love to see Emma Stone as Nancy! I feel like Emily Blunt or Anne Hathaway would stay away from this, though they'd both be great. Adele is a phenomenal talent, but does/can she act? I also think Katy Perry could make for an interesting Nancy.
Which on that note: Russell Brand as Fagin. You can probably age him up.

Gee I wonder whom they have in my mind for Nancy. Could it be....Samantha Barks? I'm fine with that though.

My apologies for the lack of actual confirmation before stating that...
As long as we're talking though, I too think that they should focus on getting Miss Saigon going before they try this. I have no idea who would play Kim. Is there a big enough actress of the right age and ethnicity?

Jay Lerner-Z: are you British? My American friends are shocked when they find out that the childhood game they knew as "Telephone" was, dismayingly, called "Chinese Whispers" in Britain.

How about going for an unknown and maybe make a discovery?

Nancy doesn't need to be a huge star, so Samantha Barks will be fine.
Dustin Hoffman as Fagin. Fagin's music will be cut down to "You've Got To Pick A Pocket" and "Reviewing The Situation" both of which could be spoke-sung or auto-tuned.
Jon Hamm for Sikes. They'll cut "My Name" so Hamm won't have to sing.
Daniel Huttlestone for The Artful Dodger

Baron Cohen is bound to be under consideration for Fagin...
