Condon will probably handle it very well.
Lari, it twas in until the very end, so I think people thought it worked. Then they decided to try it without it, and they thought it worked better. And by then, no time to re-shoot, I suppose. Blame can certainly be placed, in terms of that, I'm sure. Like "well, why didn't they think about it before?"
Emcee, I just... Well, before I read any script, before I knew anything about what was going on in the movie, I assumed Goodbye Love would be turned into dialogue. Or, at least, the Mark and Roger fight would be turned into dialogue.
I was completely shocked that Goodbye Love was on the soundtrack in full. Just because I am one of those who does believe the music would work too melodramatically for the screen.
I really can't believe they didn't make a take or two of dialogue. Sigh.
Oh well. It's said and done.
My best friend just had a master class with Mr. Rapp. He did confirm the cut but still said that he enjoyed and appreciated the movie. He said the cut songs will be seen on the DVD.

Wow. Anthony Rapp really accomplishes a lot in one day...

"It really doesn't make sense to me why he'd cut it. I hope someone asked that in the ask the cast/crew thing on the blog."
I did. of course, I wonder if they'll actually look at all 500 questions...maybe if several of us ask about the same thing, they will think about it? whatever....
I just want Rent to be the best that it can be, but I knew that's what Columbus wants too, so hopefully I can trust him.
The blogs so far have been pretty responsive to things we've wanted to hear -- I wouldn't be surprised if something turns up on the blogs addressing the cuts.
It's funny, I and many of my friends have mentioned Goodbye Love in comments onthe recent blog, but all references to the song have been edited out, or the comments not posted at all.
That's really bizarre. Hm.
I've read he cut it at the last minute, but it's going to be on the DVD.
On the DVD, yes, but it sounds like he's definitely not going to edit it back into the movie in the DVD version.... which could end up making me sad, if it's really a great scene.
absolutely ZERO of my comments have made it to the blog, and i try about once a week. maybe it's because i'm not kissing enough ass in my comments, who knows?
None of my questions or comments made it on the blog page. It's like all the right questions/comments are being swept under the carpet. It's all about the Fans? Uh huh...
Well, unlike some forums, at least we know a real person is reading the blog. My last comment I sent them was not meant to be put on the blog, and was in reference to them not posting a very innocent question about Love Heals and Goodbye Love. I just kind of let them have it and will not post there again. It has become too pretentious and all about spin.
I don't know if we can save the song but we could just bombard them with comments, emails and we even have a little time for some letter writing. They might close down the site though. I don't see it staying around too much longer anyway.
I can't believe Columbus's "explanation" of the cut. How in the world can a self proclaimed true fan of the play cut a pivotal song? People that attend movie musicals are completely capable of understanding that sick, fighting, dying people don't usually sing...but that this IS a musical. I feel a little mislead by Mr. Columbus. He needs an imagination overhaul.
I think that we all should leave angry comments about the Goodbye Love, and I know in my case I'll mention Halloween, on the RENT blog! Yeah! That'll show 'em!
It makes me feel bad to even want to say anything critical of this movie because everyone involved seems so nice, but I'm becoming increasingly annoyed with directors who take on musicals, but don't seem to have the verve to turn them into successful movies.

The RENT blog has been really good at editing any and all entries that mention cut songs.
I guess it doesn't hurt to flood the blog with our concerns, I mean, someone is obviously reading them even if they are not posted.
BroadwayGirl107 yea I heard that in the small audio clip about him cutting the song.
I still don't think it's a good enough reason ya know, I mean a good film is supposed to take you on an emotional journey, and yea some films really bring you down but the fact that it can affect you that much speaks to the power of it. Maybe Chris has done too many kiddie movies and forgot that.
Having seen the finished product, I can safely say that the rest of "Goodbye Love" should have been kept in. I can't imagine how it would mess up the pacing. In fact, the whole movie would make a LOT more sense if it was left in. I've seen the show several times, and even I was confused during the movie.

THIS is what I don't understand. Chris has spoken out about this cut in a recent Q & A and has expressed how he couldn't take the emotional impact of "Goodbye Love" (as it was filmed) and thought it would take away from the impact of the finale.
If this is the case then why didn't he see this problem ("too emotional") as he was filming it. At the very least he could have seen the that the scene as it was directed/shot/staged/acted was not working as he viewed the dailies DURING the filming.
This would have allowed him the time to re-shoot the scene with different direction/staging to perhaps "tone down" the emotional impact of the scene. Or at the very least turn the song into dialogue. This song is so crucial to how the finale works it seems highly unlikely that it would hurt the ending of the film. If anything it is THE emotional breaking point in the story which resolves itself in the finale.
Since "Goodbye Love" works on stage and sounds fine on the soundtrack, my guess is the problem was not the song itself, but the manner in which it was filmed that deemed it "too emotional".
Had someone seen this during the filming or after the dailies, the scene could have been re-shot and adjusted accordingly before they were sitting in the editing room faced with this difficult (and heartbreaking) decision.
Well, it is what it is, and my "rant" will not change the past. We can only hope that Chris changes his mind and offers us an Extended Version option on the DVD with "Goodbye Love" (and "Halloween") included in the film instead of just offering them as deleted scenes on DVD.

Forgive me for peeing on the negative vibe of this party, but here's a list of songs NOT cut in the film:
Seasons of Love
Rent
You'll See
One Song Glory
Light My Candle
Today 4 U
Tango: Maureen
Life Support
Out Tonight
Another Day
Will I
Santa Fe
I'll Cover You
Over The Moon
La Vie Boheme
I Should Tell You
La Vie Boheme B
Seasons of Love B
Take Me or Leave Me
Without You
I'll Cover You Reprise
What You Own
Finale A
Your Eyes
Finale B
My point is this - obsessing over one or two cuts will take away from your enjoyment of the white meat that's still there. I'd like to see Haloween and Goodbye Love in there as well, and I will - on the DVD.
