I've only partially warmed to Bounce fter a lot of work but being a Sondheim fan I wouldnt' actually REGRET having it and giving ti a chance if that makes sense--for a while I got really into it but then quit listening and now have forgotten most of it--and when I go to play it I always pull out another SOndheim CD, any Sondheim CD, instead...
which makes me sad. But I did seem to liek it more than you
As for Allegro I think the bad abridged recording plays a part
But back to Sondehim I do regret buying the Bridewall Saturday Night--it's not awful but isn't great fun to listen to and then pretty soon after (it seemed) the Off Broadway version came out which isa *great* CD and made the other one pointless. Usually with other casts doign a musical I liek I can find some reason to keep that copy around--but not here
I can't believe someone put Kiss of the Spider WOman on their list *cries*
Oklahoma ORIGINAL cast...horrible

Grey Gardens Original Cast (Off-Broadway).
I know this musical is supposed to be one of the best this season but I found the cast recording very uneventful and boring. Only like two catchy tunes.
A good score should leave you well informed about the characters and their situation(s).
If you want a collection of "catchy tunes" go get a jukebox musical.
A real score should reward you with each new listen. Shows like SHOW BOAT, MY FAIR LADY, CAROUSEL, SWEENEY TODD. GREY GARDENS has provided increased enjoyment evey time I listen to it.
Now I LISTEN. With headphones and (if posible) a librtetto in front of me. If you just put a cast album on in the bg as you do chores you don't get into the story and characters. (Unless its a score you know really well.)
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I rarely regret buying cast recordings because usually even on the ones I don't love (including the Boyd Gaines Company and the London cast--which I also really don't like) there are usually a few tracks I like. The closest I've come to regret is the Tyne Daly Gypsy--because it was a really good production, she was amazing onstage--but the CD is pretty much unlistenable. I think she had a cold because though she's not a great singer she was amazing in the show and I'm sure she didn't sound that bad.

In Spite of Reason - The studio recording of a musical about the last days of Lincoln.
My Life With Albertine - Can be used as a coaster or a cure for insomnia.
My Life with Albertine has a clunky number or two - the Balbec thing especially - but all of Kelli O'Hara's songs are gorgeous.
And I can't believe so many people are down on the 1995 Company which I listen to constantly.
Not listened to much or ever: Two Gentlemen of Verona, Applause, No Strings, Spelling Bee, The Life, Lucky Stiff, Music Man, My Favorite Year, Promises, Promises and (as many have said) the LA cast of Sunset Boulevard.

I can't believe someone said Promises Promises *grrr*
I need to try harder with Albertine but I just can't crack that score (and I'm used to loving "difficult" scores--laChiusa is my current fave composer).
I love Ahrensa nd Flahherty but gotta agree wqith My favorite Year--i know many adore it but I just find it tries too hard and nothing "sticks" with me
i secretly loathe my dirty rotten scoundrels CD.
when it shuffles on my itunes, i might kill myself.
and the revival of sweet charity with christina appelgate.
