Good Question:
Hard to say. I can always find one or two reasons to have everything in my collection. There are ones I'll never listen to again but I don't think I'd says I regret having them.
I am currently cleaning, and I am sorting out the Cast Recordings I should take to F.Y.E and sell back. I am having a hard time doing so, arghhh! I don't know why. I know I should get rid of them because they are taking up too much space and I rarely listen to them and besides they're all in my iPod.
I dont know, its hard to see them go... crazy right.
Alright, I'll get over it, and slap myself.
I really don't regret buying any of them, basically because I put a lot of thought into the ones that I buy.

If anyone has some unwanted CDs, pass them this direction please! I'll take all kinds of trash if I don't already have it.

This isn't to say that I don't enjoy the songs -- I simply never listen to them, and feel as if I've wasted money for an unused product.
I regret purchasing Jersey Boys, The Color Purple, and Tarzan, I think. I hardly ever listen to them, to be honest.

A-men!
I listen to those, too, Ahmelie! (don't have album) Any surprise, though?
Also-
Color Purple-I listened less than 1 time to this (didn't buy, so I didn't waste money.) It made me fall asleep, literally.
I have both versions of The Wild Party, only listen to LaChiusa's (and that's hardly ever!)
Selections from Sunset Blvd. with Glenn Close-listened a few times, then my ears hurt too much from her horrific singing.
Jesus Christ Superstar anniversary recording-do like the Mary Magdalene on there
Stopped listening to Cats ages ago
POTO. Love the music, but can't stand Crawford and Brightman.
By Jeeves (I don't think I have listened to the whoe thing through)
The Likes of Us
Sherry! (musical version of The Man Who Came To Dinner)
and I actually really like I Love You Because. I really wish I could have seen it.
How many times do you listen to a cast album wll the way through before you write it off?
Some scores take 2-3 listens to fully appreciate and the best scores provide more enjoyment with repeated listens.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
While I have plenty of cast recordings that I no longer listen to on a regular basis, there is only one I that I returned - Grey Gardens. Maybe I don't have an appreciation for that time period or the interpretation of the material, but when you are not enjoying on stage, in-context, you know it won't be a regularly played CD.
I must have known not to open it before my trip to NY. I generally rip into cast recordings as soon as I get them, but I didn't open that one before my trip.
Generally, my favorites or most recently seen shows are the ones that get the most play. Then I'll move on. So while I haven't listened to Hairspray in forever - it got a good amount of play after I had a chance to see the tour.

I love obscure, arty, shows that require a few listens to appreciate (hence why I'm such a massive LaChiusa fan
) but I never seem to even have the desire to give that chance to the cast album of My Life with Albertine. I've played it and NOTHIGN sticks--usually on first listens little bit swill. But I've not completely given up
I've been battling with my INTO THE WOODS original cast recording since early 2005. I just can't get it to stick. But I don't regret buying it; I know that Sondheim's difficult to get into, so I just keep trying. It took me six months to click with COMPANY and I still only really get on with act one of SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE. But I keep trying. I'll learn to love INTO THE WOODS one day. ^_^
So yeah, if I ever do completely give up on a recording, I promise it won't be for want of trying.

It's funny I used to find Sondheim (who i got into midn you when Iw as 10 or 11) a bit hard to get knowing I'd have to give him a few listens before I really fell for the score--but now his stuff seems so "instant" and melodic to me compared to many newer works... lol
With ITW--tho it was the score that got me into SS I'd recommend watching the DVD if you're havign troubles--I think it'll make you connect a lot more with it
I'm going to see it at the Royal Opera House this summer, so I'm figuring that'll help a lot. I can think of other shows I didn't get on with so well until I saw them onstage, so many of my hopes are pinned on this trip.
I did find ASSASSINS easy to get into. It only took one listen and I was hooked. SWEENEY only took a couple. I'm possibly just an awkward person. ^_^

Well I have to admit to still not being all that into Bounce--which as a Sondheim geek deeply depresses me

I will never listen to the Bernadette Peters revival of Gypsy again.
We own a ton of Cast Recordings, because my partner wants to own every one ever made, but I'd have to say that the one I got that I regret is the OBC recording of COCO.
It sounds like it was recorded in a tin can, and except for Hepburn having fun in the title role, (in spite of the fact that she really can't sing) the score is really dreadful.
I'm not a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber, except for Evita, so I don't listen to most of that stuff anymore, and I've had quite enough of most musicals. I try to listen to the more fun and obscure stuff, but I am a big opera fan. The one I've just discovered and love is Dvorak's Rusalka.
why not mauriposa? that one is on permanent rotation in my ipod.

"I only listen to Marry Me a Little from the 95 revival of Company and totally regret buying the 96 london revival of company! Horrible! "
The 96 London is worth seeing on TV (the filmed version) but as a listening experience I agree it doesn't offer much.
the 95 one has great vocals but just comes off as so clinical -- Tunicks' tiny new orchestartions not helping. Too bad cuz I love Monk, LaChanze, etc, etc but ya... (then again it's near impossible to top the OBCR of COmpany excepting maybe Larry Kert's new recordings for London)
Someone mentioned the film soundtrack of Night Music--I know i'm in the minority but this is actually one of my fave recordings of the score! The voices are all excellent with DIana Rigg being definitive IMHO and Len Cariou being even better with his role than he was on Broadway. I prefer Henrick/Erick being in his new key. Of course many great songs are cut but the new order of Now/Soon/Later works better for me and I *love* the new Glamorous Life. And Tunick has refined hi sorchestrations (the added strings in Little Death are particularly gorgeous)

dfwtheatreguy, Bernadette was a miscast in my opinion. I bought her recording first because she's Bernadette, and I didn't really like it. At first, I blamed the show. But after hearing Ethel Merman's and some of the others, I realized that something about Bernadette doesn't click with my perception of how the role should be played. And from a conversation I had with a bunch of people in one of my classes, I discovered that I'm not alone in this opinion.
All of my phantom of the opera cast recordings, the phantom cast recordings, sunset boulevard, all of my evita recordings, many more...

musical_devotee: I agree with the Miss Saigon CSR. I like Joanna Ampil and the girl who plays Gigi, but other than that... yeck. I can't stand Hinton Battle or Peter Coussens.
Anyway:
- Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - I'm sorry, but I can't stand the score
- Wicked
