Song and Dance with Bernadette Peters not because of the music but because of Peters lousy English accent. In fact any cast album she has been heard on with the exception of Dames at Sea.
Hedwig and the Angry inch.
Nick and Nora.
Rent.

URINETOWN
The only song I like on that album is "RUN, FREEDON, RUN."

I know tastes differ but I really find it strange that anyone could list ELEGIES here. It is far and away the best new CD I have bought in years. EVERY song I find totally stunning. The way Finn writes crisp, meaningful lyrics about what are apparently mundane topics is genius - and his melodies always blow me away, as do the performances on this CD, especially Carolee Carmello.
I don't think the lyrics to ANYTIME are silly - they are really emotional and moving. And INFINITE JOY is just that - from the beautiful opening words "Goodness is rewarded, hope is guaranteed" to the exquisite final note.

Posted: 12/10/03 at 9:05pmAmen, Namo. Tried to listen to the Dreamgirls concert on a long trip and damn near wrecked the car trying to land on the "songs." It may work in the theater, but it's like too much excelsior in a gift box. "So where's the present!"

LAST 5 YEARS (two listenings so far)
ASSASSINS (I tried again recently, doesn't do it for me)
LES MIZ (ugh!)
LA MANCHA w/Domingo (ouch!)
PIMPERNEL sampler (once was enough)
ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, the concert (didn't remember how bad they all are. OBC so much much better)
SUNDAY...PARK (I've grown to really dislike Mannered Mandy's singing style)
have come to mind.

Follies is unbearable.
I never even finished The Producers or Urinetown as recordings.
There's the studio recording of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' with Dave Willets that's so bad it's almost funny.

I try to give everything a fair chance, but the OBC of Jekyll and Hyde just doesn't do a thing for me.
And I think Dave Willits specializes in "so bad it's almost funny" recordings. Didn't he do that two person Les Miz CD, where he sang all the male roles?

I also had a hard time getting through ALBERTINE A and ASSASSINS. I had an interesting experience with A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE. After the first three songs, I thought "Oh God, this is boring. I'll never make it through." But I hung in there and was rewarded with two beautiful love ballads: "Love Who You Love" and "Love's Never Lost."

Posted: 12/10/03 at 11:43pmOh my, I almost forget....I absolutely COULD NOT listen to more than 20 minutes of DEAD MAN WALKING. The most rambling, uninspired melodies I ever heard. I sold it for 10 dollars on Amazon.

Yikes...I'm sort of surprised to see so much Producers hate. That's among my favorite CDs.
Anyway, mine are Into the Woods (revival) and The Wild Party. I've barely gotten through either.

I haven't seen Joesph on this list maybe it's not buys the CDS knowing what trash it is.
But the one I bought recently that I hated and I know a lot people are going hate for this was MIllie- I found the score competly uninsipring and gengric the only song i halfway kliked was "The speed test" other than it it was horrbile
Not as Bad as Starlight Express though (WROST MUSCIAL EVER!)

"And I think Dave Willits specializes in "so bad it's almost funny" recordings. Didn't he do that two person Les Miz CD, where he sang all the male roles?"
That'd be him.
Claire Moore sang all the female ones.
As for my list:
* Jane Eyre (tried to like, but kept humming along and ending up humming "Lily's Eyes" or something)
* Songs for a New World (really liked but then somehow stopped listening)
* Avenue Q (see above)
* Millie (kept lamenting all the changes made since I saw it in La Jolla)
* Bat Boy (enjoyed it more after I actually saw it)
The last actual cast recording that I've played endlessly was La Bohème. Before that it was Side Show which I bought literally 3 or 4 hours before the Tonys broadcast that year.
In between I listened to Only Heaven Knows quite a bit, but not nearly as much as the other two. Maybe I'm hard to please...

Posted: 12/11/03 at 6:36amI was wondering if anyone else had experiences where they didn't like a recording at first, but grew to love it the more they listened. For me, that would be The Scarlet Pimpernel, Jekyll & Hyde, Aida, and Hairspray.

Here's my current list - with more to follow I'm sure:
BIG (So cheesy sounding at times.)
THE BOY FROM OZ (Terrible orchestrations.)
BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S (2 CDs?!?!?!? Send it back.)
BY JEEVES (ZZZZzzzzzz.)
CHILDREN OF EDEN (I'd rather listen to THE APPLE TREE (Act I) or TWO BY TWO.)
COME BACK LITTLE SHEBA (No, don't and I LOVE dogs.)
ERNEST IN LOVE (Does Wilde's play really need songs?)
GYPSY (2003/Terrible editing job does this one in. 4 Bernadette Peters for the price of 1!)
THE HUMAN COMEDY (Rent the '43 movie instead.)
KELLY (Jump.....now!)
KING DAVID (Wake me when it's over.)
LORELEI (When Ms. Channing is the best singer on a CD you are in trouble.)
MAMMA MIA (Maybe it'll sound better in German.)
MAN OF LA MANCHA (2002/Stick with the original.)
MARRY ME A LITTLE (It's hard to make Sondheim uninteresting.)
SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER (Why?)
WHICH WITCH (I still haven't heard the whole thing.)
Please take my comments above with a grain of salt. I constantly listen to the likes of DEAR WORLD, OH, CAPTAIN!, BAR MITZVAH BOY, DO I HEAR A WALTZ and SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING for gosh sake.

Although I liked some of the songs on The Producers cd, as a whole I wasn't crazy about it. I have a couple of things I do to prevent spending money on cd's I will hate.
I borrow them from the library so that I can listen to them and decide if they are worth buying.
For newer shows, just released, that may not be available at the library, I go to Barnes& Nobel. I don't know if all of their stores have this now but, in Boston, you can listen to sample tracks of any cd in the store. They all have a bar code that you scan into one of their listening stations and hear a couple of minutes of most (sometimes all) the tracks on any cd.
This service saved me from the purchase of Notre Dame Des Paris yesterday, which would have been a mistake.

Any Carol Chaning cast recording: she just sounds auful.
The Dreamgirls concert recording. Why they just didn´t cast the original girls.
The Into The Woods revival cast. Horrible. Not even 1 song is worth the money for the cd.
