I don’t think she was putting the blame on understudies, that’s how people have interrupted it (disingenuously). Not having prepared understudies is either no one’s fault (it’s just the reality of the business and it does not work well during a pandemic) or the production’s fault (if they could have been more strategic). She was just describing the reality of the situation. If there were enough prepared understudies the shows would likely not have closed. Do we always have to take the most extreme, offensive interpretation possible? It seems many people want to do everything they can to make sure they are offended.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Silly. She misspoke and apologized let’s move on.

People are constantly saying they want a business man to run our country. Even though it is partially a business… but mostly not… Same here. And Aea (which I’m part of) hiring someone from the food industry… so who is Kate to say anything

A couple of people signing a petition from a silly Broadway site-BWW is nonsense and has no merit. It's all about how she said it and then realizing what she said and apologized it all lacked eloquence. Not grounds of her being fired but do feel it's time for a change after 15 years.

I don’t care whether or not she’s knowledgeable about the business if she’s keeping things running well behind the scenes. However, when you can’t properly answer questions about the business, you shouldn’t be the spokesperson. She’s had two missteps in two days, and that has resulted in a lot of embarrassment and anger. They need a more knowledgeable representative to deal with the press and public. As far as the new Executive Director of AEA goes, perhaps if he’s around as long as Ms. St. Martin, he may actually take the time to learn about the industry in which he’s working. Just because someone comes from another industry doesn’t mean they’re incapable of learning.

What she said was stupid, ignorant and offensive to all of those hard working performers. Agreed. But this has turned into a witch hunt and it’s unpleasant to witness.

What is the second misstep?

Regardless where we fall on this, as forum goers, as attendees, as fans, it really comes down to the community itself, the ones working on Broadway.

From what I’ve seen, a lot of them are very upset with her, and her comments, and have been publicly outspoken on social media.

I mean, Wicked just released this statement on Twitter:

https://twitter.com/wicked_musical/status/1474148727480803331?s=21

What does this tell us?

The community may no longer have faith in her abilities or leadership, and they have to figure out where they stand / where they go from here.

You don't know what a CEO or President of an organization is made of until the poop hits the fan. Many of the folks in tons of organizations floundered once the pandemic began. Many of these folks are only good when there are no bumps in the road. She is clearly out of her element. I'm not for cancel culture, but I am for dealing with reality. She has no idea what's going on and has no idea how to address people. Time for someone with some energy intelligence, problem-solving abilities, enthusiasm and gumption. Most of these folks are past their prime and just like the benefits. They coast.

"The sexual energy between the mother and son really concerns me!"-random woman behind me at Next to Normal "I want to meet him after and bang him!"-random woman who exposed her breasts at Rock of Ages, referring to James Carpinello

Actually, there were three. Last week was the first when she prematurely boasted in the afternoon how only 4 shows were cancelled that evening. At that point, shows had been canceling right up to curtain, and that evening had several more than 4 cancelled by the time it was over. There were comments in this thread, some of which I believe were deleted, which suggested she was out of touch then. Either she was unaware of the cancellation pattern that had been going on, or she was just choosing to ignore it like the mayor from Jaws. The second was the understudy comment, and the third was in her apology where she attempted to justify her rude comment by saying “I don’t make theatre” as if her lack of knowledge of how the industry works somehow entitled her to be rude about the competency of its workers.

Some in this thread seem to have the impression this is some new phenomenon or isolated faux pas. It isn't. Clueless is a word that has been applied many many times; it's just now it has reached primetime. As I said above, the petition may be a bit of naive silliness, but best not to focus on the distractions.
