My 16 year old daughter and I can't decide between seeing the musical A Chorus Line or Hairspray on Broadway.
Which show do you think is better?

ACL DEFINETLY!!! It's probably IMO the best show on broadway along with les mis and spring awakening.
Don't see harispray- just don't. It's the most annoying, obnoxious, and stupid show i've ever seen on Broadway.
I hope you take my word.

I've never seen ACL, but it's a legendary show with great music and great dancing [obviously]
Hairspray is a great show, very high-energy, and hummable and extremely appealing to the teenagers [your daughter would love it.]
It depends on what you want.

A Chorus Line, no doubt.
Hairspray is ok, but just go to see the movie, and skip the live show. ACL is way better.

Posted: 7/9/07 at 9:15amHairspray will be open longer than ACL & there's also the movie, so go see ACL - it's worth it.

You really think Hairspray will last longer?
I would pick A Chorus Line.

Posted: 7/9/07 at 9:20amWell, it's about to get a huge publicity bump from the movie... I love ACL, but Hairspray will definitely outlast it in my opinion.

LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!

Wow... just wow. WHAT PLOT? A fat girl complaining about how much her life sucks and why she wants to be on some dumb TV SHOW? some plot...
ACL has a very strong plot and message to convey. That message is find and follow your passion- they put everything on that line as corny as that might sound to have their dreams come true.

That is the funniest thing I've heard in a while.

I actually agree that A Chorus Line is overrated, I won't say it is the most overrated show, but I still think it is up there.
It truly depends on what you are looking for. Hairspray is fluffy and fun. ACL is a piece of Broadway history.
I would say Hairspray is definitely not as bad as some people here are making it out to be, and it's cheaper.

"WHAT PLOT? A fat girl complaining about how much her life sucks and why she wants to be on some dumb TV SHOW?"
There is way more to the plot than just that. The story deals with issues of being accepted. It's not just some "fat girl" wanting to be on some "dumb TV show."
Take your daughter to see Hairspray. I thoroughly enjoyed A Chorus Line; however, Hairspray is more fun and will probably be more enjoyable.

Oh please. It is about a bunch of people who are whining about not working on Broadway, a career that isn't noble or important. It's about a bunch of people who don't want real jobs (i.e., jobs that are actually important to the world). And while Hairspray certainly isn't heavy hitting material, its plot does deal with racism (and following your dreams as well, so you obviously haven't seen it).
Hairspray a far more enjoyable show to sit through, and has only one or twi bad actors in the cast, whereas A Chorus Line must have hit a Broadway record on having the most number of bad actors in a single show. Hell, I was missing the movie when I saw the revival, it's that bad!

A CHORUS LINE is one of the few musicals on Broadway that I can actually stand. It's a rare (for today) piece in which each aspect of the theatre comes together from the performers to the writing.
Fosse. Why do you see shows? To escape life? For a little entertainment? Well, those actors are the ones providing that service for you. No, they may not be curing any diseases but they are giving you the opportunity to escape your dreary life. And in your case, I put the emphasis on dreary.
"whining about not working on Broadway"
It's really the opposite of whining.

I would actually say HAIRSPRAY
I liked the part of A CHORUS LINE I saw, haha, but yeah, I just liked the story and characters more in HAIRSPRAY. But A CHORUS LINE also has great songs and dancing.
So whatever you think your daughter would like more, but I'd just recommend HAIRSPRAY.

Posted: 7/9/07 at 10:49amWhy are people so shallow about the plots to either of these shows? Both of these shows have great storylines in my opinion. Hairspray may be more fluff, but both shows present audiences with more important issues than just whining about getting a job or a fat girl dancing on a dumb TV show. Look beneath the surface and stop being so shallow.

"No, they may not be curing any diseases but they are giving you the opportunity to escape your dreary life. And in your case, I put the emphasis on dreary."
There is absolutely nothing dreary about my life. Unlike you, who probably doesn't have a real job, I get great satisfaction out of prosecuting criminals. And while I do enjoy a good show, I have no desire to hear a bunch of people whine about how tough their life is because they chose a career where there are 10000% more of them than jobs. That's not entertainment.
#22re: Chorus Line or Hairspray?
Posted: 7/9/07 at 11:12amHairspray is god awful. The music is good, the choreography is good, but the plot sucks. Also, the current performers aren't very good in my opinion. Plus I can't imagine it being easy to get tickets during the summer with Jerry Mathers, Lance Bass, and Ashley what's her face from "You're the One that I Want". Go with ACL, a much better show for your buck, and it actually has some substance.

Nor is that all there is to A CHORUS LINE.
And I do have real jobs. Although, according to you, I guess they aren't important to the world.
Next time you pay money to see a movie or to see a piece of theatre just think about this: you are paying your hard earned money to see people who aren't doing anything important with their lives. Who's the fool there?

Posted: 7/9/07 at 11:16amNevermind. I was going to, but I'd rather just not say anything.
