Has anyone heard anything about who will be in the cast of the national tour of The Color Purple?

Last I heard:
Celie - Adrianna Hicks, Shug Avery - Carla Stewart, Sophia - Carrie Compere, Nettie was Pheonix Best but she did DEH and Les Mis instead. Angela Birchette is returning as a church lady. That's all I know.

I'm here for Carrie's Sophia. Even though her Church Lady was absolute godsend. Whattay voice!

I'd imagine there will be an announcement shortly since the tour starts in mid October.

I love that cast if it's true! I never saw Adrianna Hicks as Celie but I've heard good things about her performance.

The names mentioned were all understudies in the Broadway revival, am I right? Is that as promising as it sounds?

Yes, they were all understudies. Carrie was bumped up to lead after Danielle left, but she was originally apart of the production as an understudy. John was very loyal to the original company and invited many of them to not only return, but be promoted to lead.

Has anybody watched the rehearsal clip on here and other sites of the finale? Maybe it was an off day, but Hicks was very underwhelming, unable to stay on pitch, etc. She also appears extremely beautiful, not what I'd expect for a Celie, but that could be different in costume and makeup.
I really wish Bre Jackson got to do the tour. She absolutely blew me away on Broadway. A beautiful and raw performance. I will definitely give Hicks a chance on tour.

I agree it wasn't my favorite performance. There was no fire. I felt like she was just waving her arms and her riffs didn't really flow emotionally with the song. I do think she will grow in the role though. I look forward to seeing her when she comes through my city. She is very beautiful, but Celie doesn't necessarily have to be "ugly". Her character just feels ugly, because of the way Mister and her father treat her. Also the makeup and wig won't do anything considering it's just a simple with a braid wrapped around her head and her makeup is very plain and they don't add age lines or anything in this production.

That's a good point. Well maybe with less make-up, it'll help, but it may be hard to tone down how radiant she is!! But you're absolutely right regarding Celie and feeling ugly.

I was hoping for Bree as well. Did Adriana go on as Celie on Broadway? I have a ticket to see it in Baltimore next month.

Adrianna went on as Celie many times on Broadway.

I saw the rehearsal clip and really enjoyed Adrianna's voice. However, I felt that some of her riffs at the end didn't flow with the song and she seemed to be riffing for the sake of riffing. I'm seeing the tour next month and look forward to seeing how this cast is as a whole.
I'm especially looking forward to seeing Carrie's Sofia since I saw her on Broadway as a Church Lady. I've heard she plays the character very different from Danielle Brooks.

I saw the revival three times and the last time I went Adrianna was on. I didn't feel she was as strong acting wise as Cynthia, her singing was amazing. Her second act acting was quite good if I remember correctly. I saw the rehearsal clip and I'm guessing she was just nervous. She sang just as well as Cynthia in the theatre so I feel like it will be fine.

for those wondering about Bre Jackson, she has re-joined the Broadway company for Book of Mormon. I have to assume she was asked to do the tour, but declined and took BOM instead.

This is not true. I believe she may have been offered ensemble on the tour, but she was not offered lead Celie.

I wonder if that's the same thing that happened to Rema Webb. I know she didn't get many chances to go on as Shug because of J-Hud's 100% attendance record and Heather and Holliday's attendance being pretty impeccable. But I heard the few times she did go on that she was great and I was looking forward to seeing her on this tour. Has anyone seen Carla Stewart as Shug? Any thoughts, opinions?
