I was talking to a friend of mine and we noticed there are 18 shows on Broadway that have a performance on Christmas day this year 2021! That seems a lot on a holiday but if tickets are selling then that means people at least have jobs.

We compared it to 2019 and back then there were only 9 shows on Broadway that had a performance on Christmas day 2019

I just found this interesting how double the number of Broadway shows are performing on Christmas day this year compared to Christmas Day 2019.
Also, back in 2019, there were no Bway performances on Dec 31st new years eve, whereas this year there is one performance of Flying Over Sunset at 7pm on Dec 31st.

I think what's interesting is the number of shows that are not doing a full 8-show week, where typically during the Christmas week, not only will they do 8 shows, and some will try to squeeze in a 9th one of the holiday weeks!

FLYING OVER SUNSET is not playing in Times Square, where the crowds will be gathering for the ball drop.

On December 31, 2005, I saw the final performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (which was a matinee) followed the the final performance of Sweet Charity, an evening performance. Then had to walk down to I believe it was 36th street just to get across town to avoid the Times Square ball drop crowds. It was a fun day, but I'm glad it was in my younger days!
Very surprised that many shows are performing on Christmas Day 2021, especially The Music Man.

That's true. Just found it interesting how FOS has an evening performance and not matinee given it's Dec 31st and how in past few years there were no Broadway performances (even when My Fair Lady was at Vivian Beaumont it didn't have a performance) on Dec 31st:

I have a friend visiting from the West Coast so we are going to see Come From Away plus the Christmas Spectacular right before that. I'll be curious to see what the overall energy is like in the area.

But take note what day of the week New Year's Eve was when My Fair Lady was running at the Beaumont. It was a Monday, so very few shows were affected by New Year's Eve that year.
