Asked if “Sondheim on Sondheim” would include any segments about its subject’s well-known love of crossword puzzles, Mr. Lapine said: “Would you like one? I could probably work something out. I guess I might as well just ask everybody what they want now and then I can just work it in.”
Now, THAT would be cool!

Will the performers in this only be singing? Will they have any set parts in it (characters)? I am confused a bit here.
"You'll get an inside look at Sondheim's personal life and artistic process. An ensemble cast of Broadway's best will perform brand-new arrangements of over two dozen Sondheim tunes."
It's an interesting concept to say the least.
The Lapine article said they will NOT be playing characters of Sondheim's life.
What character in Sondheim's life would Leslie Kritzer play anyway?

yup. And both David Kernan AND Ned Sherin were nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical in 1977 for Side by Side by Sondheim.

George Hearn does an uncharacteristically restrained "Good Thing Going," also from that DVD.

That Side by Side poster is fantastic, I'd never seen it before. Thanks for posting.
I can't figure out what a few of the shows are, though...
I'm guessing the bottom right, with the magnifying glass and whistle, is The 7% Solution?
I've no idea what the palm tree against the yellow sun is, unless it's supposed to resemble the original Broadway poster design for A Little Night Music?
It doesn't look like a palm tree to me, and I'd say it's a yellow moon (look how dark the sky is).
Therefore, I'd say yes, it is most definitely meant to represent the original artwork for A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC.
Along with seeing the show, my close friend in NYC just got invited to the 2010 Gala celebrating Sondheim's 80th birthday. needless to say, he is beyond excited.
