That would be amazing! I would love to see the Muppets do movie versions of famous musicals.

I will be more on board with the Muppet cast if we cast Sam the Eagle as Turpin, Fozzie as the Beadle, Gonzo as Anthony, Camilla the chicken as Johanna, and Janice as the Beggar Woman.
Love it! Add to that Rizzo as Toby, and Animal as Pirelli.

When people see the show of Hairspray after the movie, at least they resemble each other. Expectations would be very different for people coming to the Doyle production!

Hmm ... The Muppets' "Wizard of OZ" was good in theory, but let's not forget how shameful the end product was.
That being said, my vote would be to bring the Circle in the Square production back! THAT was a terrifying production.

I love the recording of the original production, but I thought the Doyle version was satisfying and great in its own way, I don't really understand the hate.
I would be thrilled if Sweeney came back in any form...

Except for that damn white baby coffin, I thought Doyles interpretation was brilliant and riveting. I adored the 79 version for years. But now, watching the DVD, it feels too broadly comic and dated in comparison to the Doyle.
The 79 was perfect in its time. But why redo it for a return to BWay? The movie, and Doyle's vision, have shown us that there remain new and interesting ways to treat this amazing work. While I agree that Doyle's version would not satisfy the movie fans, I don't think the 79 would either. Why not a new version that takes some lessons from the movie?

I would think that Tim Burton fans would appreciate the Doyle version more than the Prince version.

While I thought that Doyle's take on Sweeney was outstanding, I don't think it would satisfy the new fans that the movie would make. What I would like to see is a new mounting of the show based on the production design of the movie, with new sets, costumes and staging.

I loved this show on tour, and I wouldn't mind seeing it go back to NY. Also, the movie would get a lot of people to see the broadway version.

I would kill for this to happen in any shape or form!

$$$. The only reason this is even being talked about is because the Doyle version is currently touring, which means the sets and costumes could be be used. The small cast and lack of an orchestra also make it a cheap production to mount.

Lack of an orchestra? Give me a break. This is supposed to be musical theatre!

If they do bring Doyle's production back, they'd better tape it this time! And if they don't bring it back, they'd better tape the tour while they can.

The tour cast isn't worth taping. And if they do bring it to Broadway they better plan on recasting most characters. The tour cast just doesn't come close to having the magic the original Broadway cast did.

^ True that.
I don't know, I mean, I loved the broadway revival as much as the next person and I think it didn't quite find the right audience and it closed before it deserved to, but if Sweeney does go back to Broadway then I would like to see a different production staged. It was a great thing while it lasted, but the magic's gone and it won't be easily recreated.
Meh...Maybe I just saw the revival way too many times, but I feel like it's completely over and done with and I want something new.

Animal as Pirelli? Ridiculous. The only Muppet for Pirelli is Marvin Suggs.

Please, for Pirelli we'd have to call Sesame Street to see if they'd loan out Placido Flamingo.

I seriously doubt that we see a revival of sweeney back on broadway anytime soon... with that being said, however, my vote would go to reviving the original '79 production and maybe do some changes (to appeal to the "movie-lover" crowd).

I say they either do the Doyle version, or a brand new version....the 79 version is a bit too heightened and dated... it's so wierd to see so many people hate on Doyle's re-imagining Sweeney...

I saw the tour yesterday and I loved it, but kept thinking of the taped original production through-out the show. I like my Sweeney big! I'm planning to see the tour again in Feb. in Cincy. I hope the movie does boost the tour, yesterday's show was at most half house. Hopefully it was the snow that kept people away.

what i wouldn't do to see that revival back on broadway, cast intact! i'm sure it's practically impossible, but nonetheless, an awesome thought.
