Still, box office bounty and trophy wins for the "Sweeney" pic could at least set the stage for the barber's legit return to Gotham -- a move made even easier with an existing production already on the road and able to shift fairly seamlessly back onto Broadway.
We haven't looked at that seriously, but certainly we're poised to do so," says Viertel. "If the movie takes off, I'd kill to get 'Sweeney' back to New York. Viertel is one of the producers of SWEENEY on the road, whom also produced the Broadway revival (05) and COMPANY revival.
I honestly think if the movie is a smash, it could sell a lot if they transfer the tour to Broadway. And I am wanting to see the Doyle staging again.
The article also discusses how the movie will effect Sondheim's popular appeal, and the revival of SUNDAY.

I think that the movie version will be far removed from the Doyle's version, so it's hard to tell.
Love to see it happen though!

Posted: 12/14/07 at 5:51pmOf course it will be far removed. BUT the movie version of CHICAGO was also very different from the Broadway revival, and look how much money it brought and is still bringing the revival.

Posted: 12/14/07 at 5:57pmI'd rather see them revive the original production instead of the ill-conceived revival.

The chance of the original production ever being revived in the way it was in 1979, doesn't seem likely.

The Doyle version again??? Heaven forfend.
The original Hal Prince staging, now that would be a different story!

Actually, City Opera occasionally mounts a recreation of the Prince original. I saw it a couple years back with Elaine Paige and Timothy Nolen. It's fun, since they do it with the full orchestra and chorus. I actually found the Doyle production the more dramatically satisfying, to be honest, but it was fun to see it done big.
So yes, the Prince version does indeed get done these days, thanks to the world of opera.

Posted: 12/14/07 at 7:53pmI saw the Elaine Paige/Timothy Nolan version at City Opera and found it to be one of the most lifeless productions of the show that I've ever seen. Everyone seemed to be sleepwalking through it. Hey, maybe they thought they were doing MACBETH!

Posted: 12/14/07 at 9:09pmIf anything, revive the original from '79! Doyle's was dreadful! I love Sweeney, but Doyle's version had me yawning and wishing I was anywhere but there. The man next to me actually fell asleep!

Posted: 12/14/07 at 9:12pmOn the off chance that this happens, I'd be very excited to see the Doyle version that I missed the first time around. I'd definitely prefer that over the Hal Prince revival.

I could definitely see a creatively conceived more traditional Sweeney doing well on Broadway. There are probably a lot of fans who were disappointed by the Doyle version and the movie will make new fans.
Maybe not RIGHT away though...

I would think that if it went back to Broadway, it would have to be a revival of the original. Blood will have to flow! The tv ads are focusing on him slashing throats. The Doyle revival, in my opinion, would not satisfy the new fans that the movie may generate. But as a fan of the show and the music, I found Doyle's revival to be pretty brilliant.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'd KILL to see the Doyle version come back to New York.
Any chances of getting Michael and Patti back for at least a couple months?

I am seeing the tour and I would see it again on Broadway. I just thought it was brilliant to have the blood poured into the bukets and the sound design for it was fabulously creepy. But with the movie coming out, I think the original version would sell better.

I'm with VonTussleGirl, get the revival back with Michael and Patti! I'd fly to New York to see it!

Posted: 12/15/07 at 1:08amI think it's run was way too short. I saw it (the Doyle version) on tour in San Francisco in October, and it was fantastic.

Posted: 12/15/07 at 1:15amWhile I'd much prefer a full Hal Prince style remount. The more likely thing that would happen, IF this happened, would be to see the Doyle production come back from the road. But forget Patti and Michael. I'd rather see Bernadette and Marc Kudish.

Wow I would kill to see that cast CarlMagnum. Peters MUST play Mrs.Lovett, and Kudisch would make a fierce Sweeney.
I also like the idea of Cyndi Lauper.
However, add me to the group that would kill to see Prince's staging back on Broadway instead of Doyle's.
