I'm no Fosse expert so I took the show at face value when I saw it...and enjoyed it. Amazing performers. 

If anything I wish they'd had the freedom to cut the segments that didn't work anymore.

Whatever happens with Tony nominations, I hope the public gives this show a shot. They're working so hard.

I don't think every revival has to necessarily mirror the original, but anyone coming to see this current production would surely be flummoxed to understand how the original production could have lasted over 1700 performances. Everything is over thought and overyly altered to the point where Fosse's vision and Wayne Cilento's vision collide. Fosse's genius was in being able to edit both the choreography AND the staging and lighting in order to let the actors shine. This revival is like a "Project Runway" design where we desperately need Tim Gunn to come in and scream, "Edit! Edit! There's too much whickety whack!"

Overall the male dancers were far more polished and closer to capturing the Fosse aesthetic than the women in the cast. Peter John Chursin, especially, captures the Fosse style flawlessly. Not that these dancers aren't all very talented, but would Fosse have hired most of them? Color me dubious."

Fosse would not have hired most of them as they lack the Fosse edge, sensuality and his signature movement style. Peter John, Jacob and Tony really stood out along with Kolton. The female dancers were terribly lacking his style and just blend in to the background. No standout female dancers. Talented dancers yes - Fosse dancers no! Lighting is Tony worthy.

Bob Fosse looked for personalities so he overlooked technique. If you look at the ensembles of his shows, each dancer had a certain uniqueness to them - not all were fantastic dancers, which worked great with his trio groupings. He knew who to use individually and who to use in groups. He saw past your limitations and knew where and how he could use you if you caught his attention.

It's been interesting reading this thread as a Fosse neophyte (I know some of the signature moves and postures but I've never seen a full Fosse show). I enjoyed the show a lot as a dance showcase, especially the second act; I was surprised to find Jesse Green malign the Big Deal segment so much as I actually thought that was one of the highlights. But I'd agree that the male dancers popped a lot more than the female dancers to me. I particularly enjoyed Peter John Chursin, Jovan Dansberry, Jacob Guzman, and Kolton Krouse, but I thought Khori Michelle Petinaud had a fantastic singing voice. 

The America section really just confused me, as it didn't seem like there was much going on there at all where it felt like it could've been cut (it seems like it was edited from its previous version) and I kind of wished the acts were flipped but I guess that can't be helped.

The buzz hearing from industry friends is that Dancin' could slip in and get a nom over Camelot!

That would possibly give Dancin' two nominations: revival and lighting

It’s a battle between Lincoln Center Theatre’s revival of “Camelot” and director Wayne Cilento’s new version of “Bob Fosse’s Dancin.” With a mixed overall response to “Camelot,” I’ve slotted “Dancin” into my lineup. The show is fun, sexy, pays homage to a giant of the theater, and the cast is impressive as hell. But I admit that it’s risky to bet against LCT in this category since nominators fell head over heels for their past lush revivals of “My Fair Lady,” “The King and I,” and “South Pacific.” David is sticking with the Lerner and Lowe classic because he sees the show racking up a healthy number of overall nominations, when compared to a relatively low expected tally for “Dancin” (since the numbers are a true recreation of Fosse’s work, it is ironically not eligible for the Choreography race).

The singing in the show was really impressive and strong. I didn't expect that. And I fully agree on the America section. It completely lost the audience when I was watching it. But maybe editing out sections would have upset the estate or hurt the claim that this was Bob Fosse's show remounted.
