It would be one thing if it were the only version of Dreamgirls we'd ever seen, as was the case with A Chorus Line, thus the stale quality. It hasn't been produced often enough in that form for it to be stale, hence the desire to see it again.

Actually, no. The 2009 Apollo Theater production was a new staging that incorporated LED screens instead of the light towers, had different costumes and sets and a brand new song for the Act II opening.
Although I saw the first national tour with the original staging at the Golden Gate Theater in San Francisco, I only saw it once and would love to see a "modern technology" reproduction of it.
And, IMHO, Bennett's original choreography is intrinsic to A Chorus Line. I've seen snippets of other productions that tried to modernize it, and they were horrendous. Its perfect as it is

The 2009 revival at the Apollo was not a reproduction of the original 1981 Broadway production. It had new costume designs by William Ivey Long (Theoni V Aldridge did the original) and new choreography by Robert Longbottom and Shane Sparks (Michael Bennett and Michael Peters did the original). It also added the songs “What Love Can Do” and “Listen.”
