Jamie Foxx's new persona is very standoffish. I definitely prefer his older personality when he was barely making it doing stand-up and still performing on his funny, albeit very "ghetto", sitcom. He was much more of a person then, instead of this "too-cool-for-school" movie star we see now.
However, it did provide a lovely contrast for Jennifer and Anika who are completely gracious and humble.

Posted: 11/21/06 at 1:19amI'm glad someone else noticed Jamie Foxx's arrogant demeanour. He seems to have gotten the "biopic" syndrome. Once you play a meaningful role about an important icon you suddenly BECOME that person and think you're just so far above everything. Same thing happened with Will Smith when he did "Ali". But I can rant about those guys all day.

Jamie is a tool. Plain and simple. Plain and simple. I remember seeing interviews after Ray and wanted to hang myself. Or him. He needs to eat a huge, thick slice of humble pie. Boyfriend was NOT that great in the film. At all. At all.
I love the comment he made about When I First Saw You. He only did one take and he wanted it to sound rough because Curtis is not a performer. Well Jamie, you are doing a musical, and in a musical all the characters can sing! It doesn't sound tough or real, it just sounds like you can't sing. I mean come on, let's be real. He sounds like **** singing that song.
Listen is AMAZING in the film. AMAZING. Beyonce's "acting" today while performing the song was a 1 compared to her performance of that song in the film which is a 10. I'm not saying her "acting" today was bad at all, I'm just saying there is that much of a difference.
I do not think she was lip syncing. You only need to watch the first 40 seconds to know that she is not. And if she was she should win an award for that performance.

'oprah' today was great, the movie looks amazing, beyonce (live) and jennifer (clips) sounded amazing. for me the only negative was jamie's version of 'when i first saw you.' there was no passion behind it.

Holy mother of...
I just wet myself listening to Jennifer.
I wish I'd have known this was going to be on TV (How in the hell did I not know, I mean come on! For me, that is uncalled for!)
Anyway, I'm listening to the soundtrack recording of "And I Am Telling You" for the 4th time and am near convulsion. I gotta find this episode, someone had to have Tivoed it!
I've not listened to "Listen" yet -- downloading now.
This film is a long-time-comin' phenomenal piece.
ACCORDING TO JENNIFERHUDSON.NET, THE EPISODE WILL RE-AIR DECEMBER 22.

I'm trying to resist listening to Jennifer's rendition of "And I Am Telling You," but you all are making it really difficult to adhere to that little vow.

This show got me even more excited about this film - if possible! Beyonce did sound amazing on "Listen" and you can bet that every little belter girl who thinks she can sing will be doing that in every pageant and American Idol audition till you can't stand it anymore. Girl can sing. not familiar with her Pop/R&B career, but she should keep singing this type of material (not songs in French at the Oscars).
And, how awesome is Anika Noni Rose?! Just hearing those little snippets in the Fight scene - she sounded great! Wish she got to shine more, but hopefully this will open some doors for her and she can pay her mortgage. I plan to buy the Soundtrack when it comes out (because it will be on sale) and not listen to it until after I see the film.

i love watching beyonce's face..daggers!!...
See, I didn't see that at all. I thought she appeared warm and gracious to the the other cast members, including Jennifer. I don't understand why in regards to this film, so many people have to cut Beyonce down to say something nice about Jennifer or vice versa.

Beyonce may be one of the classiest superstars around now. She is graceful, elegant, generous... and friggin' TALENTED.
And by all accounts she seems to have nothing but the highest respect for Jennifer Hudson and the buzz about her performance as Effie. Beyonce's not stupid. She knows Effie is the "showy" role, but she was smart enough to go after Deena, which she fit to a tee, and I think she's come out a much stronger performer as a result. Her live rendition of "Listen" showed the TV audience that she can now ACT a song as well as sing it. No matter what happens with Jennifer and the recognition she will be getting from this film, Beyonce is already a "winner" in that she has accomplished everything she set out to do: win a coveted role on merit (after her screen test), work her ass off with an acting coach, singing coach, and even choosing to drop 20 pounds to emphasize Deena's transformation to adult pop icon... and now, when she sings a song, she brings what she learned playing Deena to her performance. I'm proud of her. Most people at her level of fame "sit back and relax" on their achievements and their money, or they endlessly repeat themselves until their fans become bored... But because she continues to dig deep and improve herself, she now calls herself an actress. I, for one, agree with her. And she earned it.

Beyonce is a superstar. She is absolutely stunning. I am 100% gay but I can’t take my eyes off her. Her skin, her legs, her lips, eyes and sensibility. She doesn’t try to sound any more intelligent than she is, she doesn’t come off as pretentious. I love her all-female band. Her recent TRL performance and this Oprah thing were incredible.
The cast didn’t really mention the genius Bill Condon, but he won’t be forgotten Oscar time. He has managed to take all of these very talented people and push them to a level they haven’t quite achieved before. I love ensembles like this, you can tell most of them bonded and wanted to do the best film possible.
I hope Hairspray and Sweeney follow suit. The best thing about movie-musicals is that we get to see the triple-threats. It is very exciting. Jennifer Hudson makes everyone people like they have won American Idol too. Her fairytale story is the very reason I love Hollywood so much and her story is inspiring.

It's clearly heresy here, but as a longtime DREAMGIRLS fan (three times on B'way, plus the revival with Lillias White), I was disappointed with Kreiger's "Listen", especially the melody. I was hoping for something distinctive and unique. It was just another in the mode of the day that lacked the tuneful bite of the rest ofthe ballads in the score. Perhaps in context, perhaps multiple hearings. Too much post-Mariah, post-Whitney for my taste.
Every other clipped made thefilm look smart and incredibly faithful to the spirit and letter (note) of the show.

BrodyFosse123's having a melt-down.
But I like your enthusiasm!
I think Listen is definitely more "modern" sounding... but no more so than "People" is in the Funny Girl score... decidedly out-of-step to appeal to popular audiences. I can justify it enough because it takes place near the end of the film, and is Deena's "breakaway song." She is shifting gears as a character, so I'll cut her some slack to shift gears stylistically in the musical genre.
The song is fine and solid enough... I don't think it's first-rate either... but I think Beyonce's performance of it IS great, and as a result the song accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do in the story.
Because it is so modern-sounding, audiences will probably gravitate toward it more than any other in the score. I do predict that it will be a front-runner for Best Song this year... and considering what has won the award during the past decade... I wouldn't be surprised one bit if it took home the prize. I could live with that choice a lot more than some in recent memory.
