I thought Gough was stunning. Would have preferred she won, but happy for Metcalf.

I have never heard Salesmen was shooting for next season. I thought Nathan Lane said that it is in the works, but he didn't seem to insinuate that any of them want to bring it in as soon as next season.

I know a person who acted with Laurie in one of her recent acclaimed roles.
They said they like her as a person. She's kind. They did not like the experience of acting with her.
The reason was, they said that Laurie was just over the top. Playing to the audience. This person was trying to play it "real" and Laurie was just doing a different kind of acting.

Sad to hear that. But as an audience member of a few of her stage performances (all Broadway, Misery, Dolls House Pt2, and Three Tall Women), not to mention her TV and movie roles, I have never perceived an instance of playing to the audience. But, not all actors are right for all roles, possibly that was an example of over reaching/acting while miscast?

lovebwy did say it was one of Metcalf's "acclaimed" roles meaning that whatever she was doing worked for the critics and audiences. I think this was just a matter of one actor not gelling with another.

LMAO! I didn't suspect it would be him.

I was beyond overjoyed with Laurie's win last night. I thought Gough was great (and I was expecting her to win, truthfully), but she wasn't the definitive Harper for me. Laurie's performance was truly mesmerizing and heartbreaking. Well deserved. She is a treasure.

It's the other actors responsibility to match and play off of their scene partner. You match Laurie freaking Metcalf. Professional actors should not plan the "style" of acting they're going to act in ahead of time. You should be working in the moment, off of your partner. That's acting 101.

After reading this, my first thought was: CONDOLA!

My problem with Gough’s Harper is that she didn’t have an ounce of vulnerability. She seemed quite headstrong and seemed like she could have marched out the door at any moment. Harper is terrified of the world, Gough was fed up with it.
Laurie was stupendous, as always.

Let's go through the list, maybe it was Chris Cooper.

Well, Dolls House Pt. 2 was excellent- and very engrossing- so if it was one of those two co-stars- they certainly worked out conflicts in acting styles admirably.

Yup that's why I didn't like her. She was like an obnoxious child who obviously had the balls to walk out out and didn't just so she could whinge about it and play the victim.

Posted: 6/12/18 at 4:21pmI highly doubt this would happen unless Metcalf wanted it to, but I selfishly want her to return to Steppenwolf in the spring and star in their production of DH part 2!

And ultimately, you have to take into account the director, who has the job of keeping the actors on track in style, consistency and tone. That comment from the actor does smack of a personal bitterness and resentment of one who possibly received weaker reviews than Laurie.
I remember Metcalf replaced Julie Walters in All My Sons at the National back in 2001 and shortly thereafter, I had the privelege of seeing her in Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune at Steppenwolf. She later returned to the National in Long Day's Journey Into Night in 2012.

Wow. East side story.
A special person associated with my friend agreed, too.

So it was Condola?
Actually, I sort of see it even if it wasn't Condola who said that. It did seem like Cooper and Condola were on different wavelengths than Metcalf was but that sort of added to the play as Nora is on a totally different plane than Torvald and Emmy.

Feels like this person should reevaluate who they confide in...jeez...

Scotty, yes. Different wavelengths is exactly how it was put. And Chris Cooper felt the same.
I've not had the pleasure of seeing Metcalf on stage. However, I thought she was pretty bad on this new season of Roseanne. That said, she was wonderful in Ladybird.
Question: If you're in a play, and on closing night, one of your cast mates gives you a shrub as a closing night gift, would you take offense? Like- a shrub. A young bush.

No, I'd put it in my living room. Anyone who takes offense to that is on a different plane.

Metcalf's Mary Tyrone was a revelation. As much as I loved Jessica Lange in the recent revival, I wish we the Metcalf production had transferred to New York.
