Metcalf is now a two time Tony winner. She is super talented- so nice to see her getting recognition at this point in her career. So much potential- would love to see her in some classic dramas- O'Neill or Chekhov- or something new by Letts or a new talent. Her options are now expanding- I hope- as a result of this new win.
I love her...but I'm pretty sure her "options" were already pretty expansive.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
I can’t get the image of her playing Hannah in Angels in America out of my head. Would she be miscast? Not sure, but I’d kill to see her tackle Roy’s death scene.
I've always wanted to see her play the Hannah track too. I do wonder if Salesman will make it in next season with the success of Metcalf, Lane, and Mantello.
I've said it before and I'll say it again- Laurie Metcalf is having the best year of her life! I hope none of the post-show press asked her Roseanne questions.
But didn't we just get Death of a Salesman? It feels like Philip Seymour Hoffman has only been dead for a few years, and so his Willy Loman is still fairly recent...
FWIW, I actually consider the Dennehy-Franz production to be definitive. It left me speechless.
Yes- she has been hot for a while- but two acting Tonys definitely ups her credibility and burnishes her already excellent reputation as a fine actress. Two time Tony Award Winner has a nice ring to it- and it further enhances her status as one of the finest actresses in the theater.
I hope this second Tony made up for her strings of losses to Allison Janney starting with the Golden Globes and lasting all the way to the Oscars after Metcalf dominated the critics' awards for Lady Bird.
Word on the street is that Mantello is assembling Lane and Metcalf for a revival. It is an absolute rumor at this point, but I would not at all be surprised if it came to fruition, especially with Metcalf's calendar being clear with the cancellation of her tv show. She won three Emmys in a row, so let's do the same with Tonys?

Yes its only been 6 years since the Philip Seymour Hoffman production of Death of a Salesman, but I said it then and I'll say it now, that entire production was miscast by 10-20 years. Willy Loman is 63 and Hoffman was 42 when he played him, Andrew Garfield and Finn Wittrock should of swapped roles as Garfield was/is too lanky for the former star football player Biff and Wittrock was to big for the living in his brother's shadow Happy.
The next production of Death of a Salesman will either star Denzel Washingtonor Nathan Lane as both men deserve the chance to take on the what is considered the greatest male role ever ever written. Part of me actually thinks Denzel wanted to test the waters of colorblind casting an American classic with The Iceman Cometh, before diving headfirst into Death of a Salesman. If it is Lane's Death of a Salesman I could see Metcalf playing Linda. If it is a Washington led Death of A Salesman, I honestly don't know if he would due a color blind production or a an all black cast. If its the later, Oprah is honestly the only age appropriate Linda I could think of, as Audra McDonald and Viola Davis, are still at least 10 years too young.

Denzel says he wants to do Lear in five or so years.
I think Denzel as Loman and Metcalf as Linda would be incredible- and give it a more contemporary feel. About time for a diverse cast for some of these classics- Denzel was stupendous in Iceman- I was sitting in row 3 center- and was mesmerized by every facial expression and nuance- D did not get the reviews or recognition I think he deserved. He was amazing- and the 4 hours flew by. I was paralyzed in my seat watching this unfold- and know a Denzel- Metcalf Salesman would be amazing. I hope Mantello is reading this.
I've thoroughly enjoyed her work in every medium and I think she is a class act all the way. Immensely talented and reportedly a supportive member of every company she's in.
I think she excels at "listening" her responses to the other women's lines was just brilliant. I wish I could go back to see it, but I'm sure it's going to be an impossible ticket now. But happy it's making money and raking it in.

I was pleasantly surprised and very happy by her win. I thought it was very worthy, and wondered what the big fuss was about Denise Gough.
I thought Gough’s interpretation of Harper was a little to manic-happy. I have seen the original first Broadway production (Marcia Gay Harden), the HBO film version (Mary Louise Parker), and the wonderful Signature Theatre (NYC) production (Zoe Kazan). The fragile nature of Harper just didn’t come through in this production.
Ms Metcalf played the home aide very realistically, and the 52 year old version of the “Tall Woman” as the well-off matron impeccably. And as far as “recent” success, she has been successful since the heyday of tge original Roseanne show (numerous Emmys).
I am still in awe of The Doll’s House Part 2 performance. She is awesome.

I agree, I didn't like Gough at all, I thought she was obnoxious, winy and annoying and dreaded seeing her each time she appeared on stage.
