See, I think the way she uses her voice in Grey Gardens is amazing. The way she integrates voice and character has to be tricky. Nothing forced there for me.
We watched the Leading Ladies DVD last week and my partner, re: Debra Monk said: "Wow, she's trying hard isn't she". That sums up Musical Comedy Monk for me. Trying a bit too hard.
She sings Everybody's Girl in character - that's just the way she did it in STEEL PIER. Her character is an over-the-top radio singer.
I think there's a different between 0ver-the-top and vocally forced.
I don't get how you can see the integration with Ebersole and not with Monk. It's exactly the same concept.
To each their own, I think.
I think the answers to this are in the "Fattest Cat" thread.
I'll have to check that out!

I think she could be good if they were not going the route they are clearly going to take. I typically like Debra Monk, although I did think someone had attacked my mother when I first heard her in "Company" this summer.
You missed the "Fattest Cat" thread Rath?
I wonder if it got deleted. We learned a lot from that thread.
Its fun to read all these posts in order.
Not that I haven't been watching them unfold for the last 30 minutes... but its still fun.
I must say that even though I adore Sherie I can not stand the though of her as Ursula. It just seems like there are SO many people who could do it better
iluvtheatertrash, what one of the initial posters was trying to say wasn't that Monk couldn't do the role because Sherie Rene Scott had been cast but that she couldn't do it because Disney is going the route of having the same actress that plays Ursula play Vanessa (her younger, beautiful form.) Debra wouldn't work in the capacity Disney is having the part do on stage.
Monk is a very tricky to cast in alot of things. I have seen her fall flat in shows like "Company" and "Chicago" (more the former than the latter) in roles that one would think, on paper, she'd be perfect for. On the other hand though I've loved her in parts of the same nature in shows like "Curtains" and "Steel Pier," so (for me at least) she seems to be very hit and miss.
