I don't think they make deductions but it is tax season so maybe.
And they voted that way because they felt like it. Maybe you'd like to personally ask every voter.

You're right, though - it is fair to deduce that the producers who voted were likely thinking of what shows they could bring on the road.

"What do people deduct from the Tonys choosing shows like Avenue Q and Kinky Boots over Matilda and Caroline and Change."
With Avenue Q vs. Wicked back in 2004, the producers of Avenue Q knew that Wicked was such a big juggernaut and was gonna be a smash hit on the road, they told all the Tony voters that they were going to take Avenue Q on the road. So after Avenue Q pulled the upset and beat Wicked for Best Musical, it was later revealed that they only made an exclusive deal with Las Vegas, which irritated a lot of Tony voters.
With Kinky Boots vs. Matilda two years, so many theatre producers literally went after Matilda placing the best possible offer after the show had its world premiere at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Those producers were left dangling and dangling until the RSC went with the Dodgers who came out of nowhere at the last minute. So therefore, all those producers who really fought hard for Matilda were screwed by the RSC so much, that it lost the Best Musical Tony Award because of it.

Posted: 3/23/15 at 8:30pmWell, Kinky Boots is much better than Matilda and deserved the Tony (imo) and the voters saw that. Avenue Q I don't think should have won over Wicked. Maybe they realized Wicked didn't need a Tony and wanted to be nice by giving it to Avenue Q?

Posted: 3/23/15 at 8:36pm^That's pretty much what the Tonys have kind of been doing lately with shows like Newsies and Beautiful where voters recognize that they're already gonna do great business on the road, that neither of them really need the Tony for Best Musical at all. Therefore, voters have probably felt that shows like Once and Gentleman's Guide needed the Tony more to stay alive.

Posted: 3/23/15 at 11:11pmI remember there was a tour of Avenue Q that was at the Fisher Theater in Detroit several years ago, although it was I think in 2008 or 9. Did that have nothing to do with the original production?

Posted: 3/23/15 at 11:43pmkids, the Tonys are an enterprise of the League, an association of commercial producers and their landlords. They have very little to do with "art" and a lot to do with "commerce." A majority of those who vote for the awards are interested in making money. Them's the facts.

I fell asleep during Once and almost left at intermission but...it is a Tony winner!?? And so underwhelmed with GG cast recording it didn't bode well when I saw the show last Aug. Needless to say I exchanged my season tix in Des Moines, IA of this show for another show this season!!! Just my opinion of course. I loved the other Tony winners in this decade so far Memphis, Book of Mormon and Kinky Boots!!!

The show did eventually tour, but it didn't hit the road for a number of years after winning the Tony. The producers signed a deal with Steve Wynn in which they agreed not to tour the show in North America as long as the Vegas production was running. That production didn't open until 2005, and though it only ran until the spring of 2006 it kept the show from touring for far longer than was anticipated when it won the Tony in 2004 (the first national tour finally started in the fall of 2007).
