My god, this board is showing its true colors again, singling out Denzel as the sole reason for Othello high prices. We have Gyllenhaal whose temporary dressing room is so extravagant and expensive that it was featured in high end magazines. Who also stars in Othello, but is given a pass. We have GNGL play with Clooney breaking historical sales records and charging as much. We have Glengarry with 3 white A-list celebs whose producers didn't even bother providing affordable ticket option of any kind except that bs SRO. Yet out of all of them you keep keep picking on Denzel, foaming at your mouths that you can't get a cheap ticket for a sold out Othello, although it has lottery, digital rush and student rush. Many more cheap options than the other 2 blockbuster plays. I swear, some of your hoods are showing and you don't even realize it.

There's never been this much outrage directed towards the actors over ticket prices for shows starring people like Hugh Jackman, Nathan Lane, SJP and Matthew Broderick, Josh Groban, George Clooney, Daniel Craig, Adam Driver, Keanu Reeves, Andrew Scott, John Krasinski, etc. Yup -- sounds about white to me!

in the Actors on Actors interview, Audra talked about how much she'd love to see Othello and mentioned "I can't afford it" and Jake kind of just brushed it off without really saying anything about ticket prices

Has Clooney, Gyllenhaal, or anyone from Glengarry openly commented on ticket prices?

Do they need to? They happily take their hefty weekly salaries because people are willing to pay top dollar to see them. Who wouldn't? The fact that Glengarry has nothing but SRO is ridiculous but somehow it didn't warrant a separate conversation on this board. People chose to only pick on Denzel out of 5 high profile male actors who are selling out theaters this season. He's only different from them in one way.
Basically, be quiet until you all create threads about Bob, Bill, Jake, George, or Kieran. Racism and defending it isn't a good look.
Denzel is being talked about specifically because he specifically chose to talk about this. No one else has made public statements on their ticket prices so there already isn’t much to discuss further.
Is racism and unconscious bias factors in the discourse? Absolutely. The fact still remains that Denzel is choosing to speak on it, so there is going to be discussion. There would also be discussions about the others - but they have been (wisely) advised to not touch on it. Denzel should have been advised just the same, because these out of touch celebrity actors don’t have much of value to add to the conversation.
Also, these others actors are not out here painting themselves as some religious gift to the masses, so there’s that.
Neither is he. And you don't get to say he has "nothing of value to add" . He was asked many questions and answered them honestly.
People trying to defend their bias is extremely embarrassing at this point.
Take a class and improve yourself, or stay silent. The world is f*cked enough without racist hatred on a theater board.

Racism has absolutely nothing to do with the calling out of Denzel- he mentioned ticket prices- and comments were forthcoming. Every show now on BWAY has a diverse presence- Gypsy - Glengarry Ross has the office manager someone who is black- which would never have been the case way back when....and on and on...alll the new theaters are named for black artists and playwrights- but it, of course, is never enough----people need to see themselves as victims.
Denzel seems to be proud of the fact that he is selling out with prices so high- as he well should be. He is an awesome talent- and brings gravity to any project he graces. If he did not bring up the subject, this particular thread would not be happening. And the fact that 49 dollar tickets are being sold- BRAVO! That is a good thing and Denzel bringing it up is fine by me. Racism would not be as rampant if people would just relax and not call out every criticism of a POC as emanating from racism. NO- it is not racist to comment on Denzel's comment- in fact- I applaud his comment- and great for the people who can afford to see him in this show. If you cannot afford the tickets, see something else- or rent Gladiator 2.

Jesus, some of you are daft af. You've been picking apart Othello and specifically Denzel since the previews started, his recent interview only added to the fire. What does Glengarrys secondary black character has to do with their prices being equally outrageous without any real affordable tickets option?

Yes- people have been calling attention to what many see as a mediocre production--is it racist to call out mediocrity?
And I mentioned the secondary character in Glengarry because the theater community has tried to keep diversity in the forefront of casting decisions- and things are changing- but still- any chance to play the victim is not overlooked. It gets tiresome.

No, Gibson2--you are a bigot. And this is how absurd this whole conversation is- because anyone who disagrees with you is automatically a bigot- and this whole thread is about who agrees with you and who does not. Get a life.
Denzel is one of my favorite actors- saw him in Iceman a few seasons back- and was enthralled---and----

There is no evidence to suggest Denzel Washington is not signing for Equity Cares. Equity Cares is a charity that supports the financial needs of SAG-AFTRA members facing hardship, and there's no indication that he is boycotting it or refusing to sign. In fact, Denzel Washington has been a recipient of their support.

Oh good. Pulling the racism card again. Lovely. This happens to be a thread about Denzel’s comments on the high ticket prices. Period. I’ve seen pretty much every movie Denzel has ever made but I guess I and everyone else on here are racists because we found his snooty comments about ticket prices to be ridiculous. Got it! And PS - After some of the reviews I’ve read, they couldn’t pay me $900 to sit in row three of the orchestra for this thing.

Yeah, I find it hard to believe he would not do this. Especially since he has been talking about his roots in the theatre in interviews.

From his hamster that whispered to him in the middle of the night, obviously. Huge lies such as he isn't helping Equity Cares have consequences. Remember that before you make sh*t up for likes.

“Remember that before you make sh*t up for likes” is a phrase YOU should say every time you look in the mirror.

You do understand Broadway shows are a business, and the idea is to make money. They set prices to what the market will bear, it is called capitalism. There is nothing that says they have to set aside $49 student tickets to the show like all other shows. I truly doubt Denzel has anything to do with the pricing of the show. All he cares about ishis salary requirements were met."
Our taxes actually support Broadway shows like Othello through tax credits, to the tune of 25% of their production budgets (at least until it's stripped away by Hochul or Trump). State and city taxes also went into the renovation of Times Square and continue to pay for its upkeep, its policing.
So yes, it's capitalism for really rich people like Denzel and his backers that we are all paying for out of our own pockets. It's called American Capitalism.

Brian Cox is a dick. Jake G is the best thing about this terrible production. Pretty trashy for an actor to slag off another actor- and he hasn’t even seen him in this.

Is anybody forcing you to buy tickets to see "Othello". The answer is no. You don't like the high price of certain tickets; you just don't go to the show. I would love to sit behind home plate for a Yankee game or behind the Knick bench for playoff game, but I can't afford to pay $1,000 for that seat, such is life. Your taxes also supported those teams by helping build the stadium/arena and additional improvements in the neighborhood. The $900 ticket to "Othello" or Clooney show is no more expensive than good seat at a major rock/pop star show. Once again folks, supply and demand.
