Dirty Dancing Tour#1

I admit it...I saw Dirty Dancing musical tonight in San Francisco....

and i liked it

Its not really a musical, its more of a dancical....

which i think is smart, because this book has such a need for strong story and dancing that to find tour actors that could also do lead vocals would be a heavy lift (see robert fairchild in American in Paris)

I think they did a fantastic job adapting the movie to the stage

All your favorite songs were there and most of the key songs you love were recordings of the period originals (love man, time of my life, do you love me, and this magic moment were live)

The dancing was phenomenal

All three of the prinicipals Baby (Rachel Boone) Johnny (Christopher Tierney) and Penny (Jenny Winton)

were very strong on acting, dancing, and chemistry.charisma

There IS an orchestra eight pieces set on the second story center of the stage, and the live singing was covered by secondary characters

the set worked for me they had several screens on the back and sides that shifted to kellermans, and a hilarious screen for the water practice dance lift scene.

It was really fun seeing these characters from a movie i really loved come to life.

I had low expectations for this show because of some poor reviews ive read....

I bet chiropractors make a lot of money the day after performances when everyone has gone home and practiced "the lift" with someone.....

Lol. This is the only positive thing I've ever seen about this show.  To each his own.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I posted positive thoughts when I saw it. It's not a great musical by any stretch and the scenery is mostly projections but I still enjoyed the show and the audience I saw it with was very enthusiastic. It's fun.

I saw it during one of it's early tour stops. It was painful. I left during intermission.

I completely agree. It's far from the best thing I've ever seen (far far far far), but it was a fun night at the theatre.

It still boggles my mind that this & FLASHDANCE continue to tour. Are they even selling well on tour?? I know the FLASHDANCE tour had to eliminate some stops due to poor ticket sales.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Is there any reason they would keep touring if they weren't making money?

So does Patrick Swayze!

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Dirty Dancing has actually done pretty well on the road. I personally thought the show was terrible.

I also thought it was terrible.  The only, and I mean only good part were the three(?) vocalists.

it was sold out opening night in SF, and the crowd was very enthusiastic

SF must think theres demand as its booked here for almost a month!

As I said, I dont consider it to be a musical...its a play with dancing

none of the lead characters sing, so its very different

I totally understand how many musical lovers dislike this show

its how i felt about Contact back in 2000....

Saw it a couple of weeks back in LA at Pantages! What a dud...felt very disappointed as I thought this was a musical which it absolutely is not! It's like they tried to recreate the movie onstage which for me just didn't work. The movie was just way better and I could have just stayed home and watched it again. Of course the audience gave it a standing ovation but that really means nothing these days does it?

I mildly enjoyed first time I saw it and certainly didn't get the same satisfaction the second time. The UK seems to love these chick flick musicals.

inexplicably it has done well in London and run for about 6 years, also sells well on the road in the UK.

I definitely agree that the movie is better and with all the projections they might as well have just projected the movie but I still thought it was fun.

Tour sold very well in Vancouver, and was raved about.

I did not find the show to be horrible, but the complete reliance on projections for scenic elements made everything a bit one-dimensional (as if the plot did not do that already.) I do give the designers credit for using the projections in a creative way to simulate the lift in the lake scene.
