Why I would prefer Disney come up with original idea, and I'm not 100% sold on all the live-action hype I will say I LOVE Mulan.

Oh crap I completely misread this. For some reason my mind said they were developing a Broadway show. Ugh. Can we stop with this, Disney? We get it, you have no more ideas. You know what would ACUTALLY be a cool live action adaption? AIDA.

For some reason, I remember the adaptation on Broadway ACUTALLY being live-action and not animated. And it was not very cool. Or good.
Cause let's face it, your original Disney cartoons weren't even that good in the first place. Besides BEAUTY and Lion King and MAYBE Mermaid, the rest were pretty mediocre.
Why? Because they were older? For "mediocre" films, many of them certainly turned out to be iconic and internationally beloved classics for generations. If only most films could be so "mediocre". As vitriolically phrased that comment was, I totally agree. We don't need live-action companions to the animated films (though I do disagree that they were all mediocre to begin with).
The oughta expand the Jr. version for Broadway. At least they'd bring something new to the material instead of taking away aspects.

Dang, Bilbo3! Tell us how you really feel! So you're basically saying ALL the cartoons besides Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King (which are both overrated in my opinion) were mediocre? If their stuff is basically crap, then you don't have to pay money and watch. Simple as that.
I LOVED Cinderella! I've seen it 5 times already. They did a great job, so I'm sure they'll do a great job for Mulan and Beauty and the Beast.

Digrassi, don't get me wrong, I love Aladdin and Mulan and the rest but from a practical view, Lion King, Aladdin, Mermaid and beauty were the most prestigious films to come out the Disney renaissance. The Disney renaissance never caught fire after those, so yes, I don't think it's unfair to say the rest were mediocre.
In fact, the animation department was in big trouble of being shut down because their films weren't making much money. That is until THE LITTLE MERMAID came along and put them on top. So...YES, once again, it is fair to say Disney cartoons did have a phase of mediocrity.

Mulan has always been a favorite and I'm sure this will be a beautiful, artistic, and intense film. SO excited! Probably won't arrive though until 2019 at the earliest.

What about the movies that came way before Mermaid, like Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, etc? Why discount them? Also, Princess and the Frog, Tangled, and Frozen were all great as well.

What about them? They were a nice introduction to what became the peak of Disney, but let's not kid ourselves and say Sleeping Beauty or Cinderella were exactly masterpieces. Didn't you understand what FROZEN was picking fun at? Disney was essentially making fun of the tired themes in those old Disney films like Cinderella and sleeping beauty and snow white. They aren't bad or anything (mostly) but they don't really hold a candle to Beauty, Mermaid, Hunchback, even Pocahontas.

I love when people say "they know what they are doing" as if the company never had a flop before. As you can see with Malif (which holds a 49 percent on RT) Disney live actions are VERY hit or miss. So I would disagree that they are always on par. They Infact, don't always know what they are doing. But hey if you like the films, then that's wonderful. But the people who don't have very valid reasons for not.

Why was Aida even produced by Disney? What was their incentive if they couldn't make a movie (animated or not) and sell Aida merch?

I'm looking forward to this way more than 'Dumbo'. The story has plenty of action and adventure and ancient China looks majestic on screen. I hope they get Ming-Na Wen to play Mulan's mother.

I would kill to see a live adaptation of Aida. Wasn't one planned? What ever happened to that project? As for Mulan will this film include the songs? Like Reflection?

I agree with Bilbo that many of the Disney classics are kind of mediocre when viewed with an objective eye; yes they are iconic, and yes they were revolutionary for the medium of animated film, but I don't particularly enjoy watching movies like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, etc.
HOWEVER, I do think that there are TONS of wonderful Disney movies, throughout the Disney renaissance, after, and even before. It's a matter of taste of course. You may not like them, Bilbo, but LOTS of people do, and that's what Disney cares about.
Regarding the issue of their live-action reboots, I'm generally on board for it. I wasn't a fan of Maleficent, but I thought Cinderella was very well-done, and very magical. It brings a new kind of life and humanity to these beloved stories. I'm looking forward to what they do with Beauty and the Beast and Mulan. Also, I don't think it's fair to criticize them for not coming up with new ideas, while they are still making animated movies in addition to their live-action reboots. I personally didn't like Big Hero 6 as a movie, but come on, that was a really bold, new choice on behalf of Disney. Besides, there are many sub-studios within Disney, the main one being Walt Disney Animation Studios, which I'm assuming is not involved in the live-action reboots.

Mulan has potential and you could cut the songs and the cute elements like Mushu and it would still work well, I wonder if they would go for a more realistic approach or have some fantasy elements like the ancestors.

I must admit, I'm not really excited for this. I would much rather have another Disney film get the live action treatment--I would not have thought of Mulan. This makes me wonder if this will be a direct remake of the animated film or a more realistic retelling of it. I'm assuming this will be a musical too (?)--I didn't read the article. This just seems like an odd choice.
However, I have to say: Disney has created amazing films for quite some time. The Disney renaissance in my opinion was just a small bit of all of the amazing Disney films. There are only a few Disney films I am not a fan of.
