Disney's next big project

I hate when people come on here and give "insider" news...but I'm dead serious about this one.

When FIDDLER ON THE ROOF closes in January, Disney plans to move THE LION KING over to the Minskoff, vacating The New Amsterdam for MARY POPPINS. Disney is also seriously considering purchasing the row of restaurants on 45th Street (Barrymore's, Puleo's, Sam's, etc.) Their plans for that space aren't definite yet, but word is they will be building their own theatre.

Don't shoot the messenger.

re: Disney's next big project

Maybe if they build their own Theatre, they'll free up houses for non-Disney shows. of course, they won't...they'll take even more re: Disney's next big project

Can you tell I'm not a big Disney fan? hehe

re: Disney's next big project

I just hope they have a cool theatre for "The Little Mermaid" if that works out. That's the only one I plan on seeing. I doubt I'll see Tarzan or Mary Poppins. If they do Little Mermaid right, I'll see it.

MARY POPPINS is the only show of theirs that I'm interested in.

I'm one of the biggest Disney fans around, believe me, but I don't think a Broadway takeover is the best idea. Especially when it means getting rid of a bunch of businesses.

re: Disney's next big project

Isn't the Minskoff a VERY modern theatre? It's just basically a huge cement block. I would think it would be a bad choice to move the Lion King in there...the show's design just doesn't seem to fit in with the style of the Minskoff.

re: Disney's next big project

They'll probably redecorate the Minskoff to fit Lion King if they do that. I'd see Mary Poppins and Little Mermaid (Doug Wright is writing the book, I mean really). Tarzan....depends on who's the one in the loincloth.

re: Disney's next big project

Mary Poppins is a great spectacle, although I'm not sure how much it will change for Broadway. The character of Mary seems a bit secondary in the musical, and it centres more in the Banks family.
I like the new songs songs, though, especially "Anything Can Happen".

re: Disney's next big project

mmm... I can't see THE LION KING at The Minskoff, but then I've never seen it so I can only imagine, but I saw Fiddler at the Minskoff and it just looked like a small theatre. maybe the New Amsterdam isn't that big either though, I really have no idea. But I'm excited for Tarzan and anything Disney can maybe do to bring more people to see Broadway shows is fine with me... I'd just rather see Hunchback instead of Little Mermaid...

re: Disney's next big project

They are downsizing. They know that the new musicals will proboly take over popularity of the Lion King, and less and less people will go to see it and would rather see the new ones. Therefore its smart to move into a smaller theatre that they can fill rather than have this HUGE one that they maybe only be getting half. Its all about the money.

re: Disney's next big project

So how do all the theaters work? I mean if Disney does move the Lion King in January. Then what does the New Amst. do until Mary Poppins moves in in late 06? Can another show move in? Or can Dinsey call "dibs" on the theater? It just seems stupid to have all these new shows looking for Broadway houses, and not getting in, while Disney holds dibs on this Broadway house that wont have anything running in it for a couple months.

re: Disney's next big project

yes, Disney would call 'dibs', thou a limited run special event can certainly play in the inter-rim, with the understanding that they "gotta go --- we got dibs".

"Dibs" is now my new favorite word

re: Disney's next big project

"Minskoff was just another SMALL theatre" ????

Minskoff is one of the biggest theatres on Broadway....

re: Disney's next big project

Disney doesn't have to call "dibs" on the New Amsterdam...they own the theatre.

They have permanent "dibs."

re: Disney's next big project

the minskoff is huge. i can't really imagine lion king there. but if that's what they want to do! maybe it will be easier to get tickets now? probably not...

re: Disney's next big project

Nothing seems to run very long at the Minksoff. Its a huge theatre. One of the biggest on Broadway and ugly as sin. Moving a solid hit like THE LION KING there is a smart move.

I, however, can't imagine Disney opening TARZAN and MARY POPPINS while BEAUTY and LION KING are still running, with LITTLE MERMAID just a season behind. It's overkill, and the negative anti-Disney backlash would be palpable.

My guess is BEAUTY will close before POPPINS opens so that Disney basically has no more then 3 shows running at once.

re: Disney's next big project

I LOVE Disney, but I sincerely hope they stay somewhat away from Broadway. as in, please don't let them take over 3-4 theaters at one time.

re: Disney's next big project

The only "disney" show I've ever seen was Aida.

I love Disney as much as the next person...but I don't think it's right for them to expand their monopoly to Broadway.

Michael Bennett - i don't think they'll close beauty and the beast(just because they said that they want to make it the next cats or phantom) i'm a disney fan(actually a ton more) i'm not sure if i'd see tarzan(depends on how it's done) and the same goes for little mermaid(not my favorite disney movie) but i love mary poppins, so i'd definately see that

re: Disney's next big project

last time i saw this discussed, word was that, yes the Minskoff is smaller seating-wise than the new amsterdam, but there are more orchestra seats (higher price), which would mean that lion king would have potential to make MORE money there than at the NA. VERY smart...more money, less seats (if, like someone said, people get tired of seeing the lionking).

I think they will hold off opening Mermaid until atleast one of the others close...it wont be so bad, as long as we can keep the disney shows on broadway four or less at a time.

re: Disney's next big project

I don't think Tarzan will do that well for some reason...but I think they should have brought over The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Mary Poppins will do well and so will The Litte Mermaid and I think one of the older shows will probably close like "Beauty and The Beast" just for the fact that schools, regional theatres, and community companys are going to start doing it alot cause they can get the rights for the show.

*claps for Rocks comment*

but seriously, Im torn on this issue. On the one hand, Disney brings in a lot of business for Broadway. On the other hand, it's becoming a monopoly. But I also credit Disney for helping to clean up the area around the N.A. So I'm not sure where I stand on this issue.

re: Disney's next big project

I think Lion King would work fine in the Minskoff, The Dutch and Hanburd productions are in modern theatres with very little frills, and they work almost better since most of the Lion King's designs are abstracted and minimalised. What i also like about Minskoff is even though it is big in terms of seating, it has a small feel to it.

But i do aggree that they should concentrate on other more 'serious' shows like Hunchback and should also seriously look at doing Pocahontas. I also somehow think that a show like Tarzan lends itself to an "Arena" style production rather than a regular theatre.

And i do think it time Beauty closes, chances are if this move does happen, they would put Mermaid there.

Dont forget, Like Aida, Mary Poppins isnt really billed as solely a Disney production, even though Aida was, they always tried to distance their name from the Disney brand by producing it under the Hyperon arm of Disney.

I know for a fact that Lion King will be staying in the New Amsterdam Theatre for a long long time.
