Do you think "The Addams Family" has any chance of snagging Tonys?

About the 50% rule for Best Score - just so people are clear, it wasn't created in reaction to Tommy winning the award in 1993. It came about in 1996 when Rodgers and Hammerstein were nominated for Best Score for State Fair.
Obviously, both men had been dead for many years at that point and the majority of the music in the show had been written for the movie or for other stage productions. So it was decided that out of 15 songs, only the 4 that had never been performed on Broadway or in a movie before would be considered when voters came to that category. Those 4 were Driving at Night (which was actually music from Allegro with new lyrics by James Hammerstein), You Never Had It So Good (cut from Me and Juliet), When I Go out Walking With My Baby, and Boys and Girls Like You and Me (both cut from Oklahoma!).
Afterwards, everyone realized that the whole thing was a little silly so the 50% rule was born to prevent it happening again.
The situation with American Idiot this year is not the same thing.

Posted: 4/14/10 at 9:48pmIf it's decided that the original American Idiot CD was a concept album, then I don't see why the score couldn't be at least considered for a nomination, but I just don't buy into the statements made about there being bigger ideas for the initial album from the start. It seems more like a convenient after thought.

In a March 28 interview with Associated Press, Billie Armstrong says, 'The thought [for 'American Idiot'] was always for it to be staged or create a film.' But he tells Entertainment Weekly: 'I didn't know I was writing a musical when we were doing it.' It sounds like it was Michael Mayer who first came up with the idea of turning it into a stage show a couple of years ago, and then Mayer got Armstrong's blessing.

Ok, then, let's discuss the chances of Tony nominations for Savannah Wise (Ragtime), Alli Trimm (Bye, Bye, Birdie), Cass Morgan (Memphis), and Elizabeth Stanley (Million Dollar Quartet). By your "logic" (and I use the term loosely, here), they also stand a chance at being nominated in the Best Featured Actress in a Musical category.
If you have to put the word logic in quotation marks to feel better about yourself rather than apply the actual use of logic, then there is no need to discuss it further. You have already decided that your magical opinions trump facts and that delusion is greater than reality. You go with that and have a wonderful time.
