Over 10 years ago I asked the question if Bernadette Peters would ever play Lovett - she was screen tested for the film, NYPhil concerts have past, an Off-Broadway revival has past, a London revival and concerts etc. and it never happened. I think her time to play the role in any context now in terms of capability may also have past, sadly.
However, Donna Murphy may still have 5 years to play the role. She is an incredibly intricate and hardworking actress & singer who I would love to see in the role. Will it ever happen? Or perhaps should it ever happen? I hope so.
Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.
I hope it does..... or at the very least something similar to Dolly where she performs 1-2 times a week and let another actress do the other performances. I recall reading an interview where she really liked the Dolly schedule with Bette Midler.
I'd do anything to see it. I think she'd be spectacular. A mid-sized production with a nice orchestra would be my dream. The small productions I've seen have all been great, but I miss seeing the trick chair and the oven. And the minimal orchestrations for ST always left something to be desired, imo.
I’ve been dying to see her do this role (and Rose in Gypsy) forever. I was definitely hoping against hope that she might turn up in the Barrow Street production. Who knows? Maybe some other concert or production will materialize for Sondheim’s 95th.
It’ll happen. I’m old enough to remember a young, fresh faced, and very ambitious girl, working as an elf at Macy’s Santa land. Her name was Donna Murphy.
