I don't think I could do it justice though...there's just something about Harvey screaming IN MY LIFE that wouldn't be funny if I did it
But that doesn't mean it'll stop me
Hard to know how any of this will impact the Tonys. The only "unexpected" winners IMO were Awake and Sing! for sets, JLY, and Beth Leavel. I don't think that this really puts Drowsy in the lead for musical -- all else being equal, I think critics are more likely to go for the completely original musical rather than a jukebox one, while I don't think the Tonys necessarily have that frame of mind.

Prior to the DD awards tonight, I thought just the opposite.

Most of the Drama Desk voters aren't critics, but reporters, columnists, publicists and folks with other theatre-related jobs. It's the Drama Critics Circle that's made up of critics.
I didn't even think those were too surprising, mikem. But lots can happen between now and the Tonys. And remember, The Color Purple will be thrown into the mix as well. With the campaigning and the voters rewatching the shows, I think it'll be interesting. I don't think it's anybody's Tony just yet. Well, ohk, maybe The History Boys. Still, it'll be an interesting awards season and I don't think much has been cleared up after tonight. For example, Actress in a Musical and Actress in a Play are both up in the air still.

I have not seen Drowsy yet, but from others' comments, it seems that Jersey Boys is much more commercial, which is more what I meant about how I think the Tonys might be more likely to reward Jersey Boys than Drowsy.
I also personally felt that JLY was campaigning a bit too much during his speech, but I don't know if the voters would agree. I'm not sure that Michael Cerveris, Patti, or JLY are going to win votes because of their performances tonight -- both Marc Kudisch and Christine Ebersole came off better to me.

Well since neither Christine or Marc are nominated, I don't suppose that's really an issue.
I don't think JLY was campaigning. I just think he was so overwhelmed by the honor and wanted to say what was on his mind, because who knows if he'll ever have the chance again? Can you blame him? I thought it was a wonderful, albeit long, heartfelt speech.
I was hoping for tears. What a disappointment, Mr. Young. Tsk, tsk.
Colleen_lee, I don't think that you took my post in the way I meant it. Obviously, JLY/Patti/Michael are not competing against Marc/Christine for the Tony. I meant that if you asked me what the best performances of the show were for me, I would not say JLY/Patti/Michael. They weren't bad (in fact, they were all very good), but as I said, I don't think that their performances tonight won them any votes.
I was hoping for blood.
I mean Michael did have his razor, and his hands are quick.
As far as the performance question, if I ever find out a TONY voter based their vote on the performances in a award show I will go "Raquel Welch" on them.
Mary Louise Wilson really deserved that award over Beth. I feel bad for her because she is turning out a spectacular performance but is being a bit overshadowed just because of how great Christine is. Anyway, I am still very happy Christine won, and her performance on the show was great!
So was anyone there is in person? Do we get any dish? Come on, you know you have stories...who was drunk? Who got lucky? Who bitch slapped who? Spill...
If I want my tarot cards read I'll call Barbara Seigel. If I need an opinion of a show I'll ask Margo Channing.

Would somebody please list who ended up performing, and what? Thanks...
Um...
Doug Kreeger and someone performed from THRILL ME
The Jersey Boys performed "Can't Take My Eyes/Walk like a Man"
Patti and Michael performed "Priest" from SWEENEY TODD
That's all I saw, I'm sure I'm missing many.
Christine performed "The Revolutionary Costume" from Grey Gardens
I'm a day late on this one, BUT...
I'm *super* excited for Ebersole, Leavel and DROWSY!
I'm relativley suprised by Young, but I still have complete faith that Cerveris will take the Tony.
Anyone know exactly when they will air on PBS?
“We’re critical, not political.” He gives a big, endearing smile, because he knows what questions are coming next? Critical in that you criticize? Critical in that you’re of ultimate importance? But I know he means “critical” in the sense that critics are the ones who make the nominations and choose the winners. That isn’t true of all organizations, so chances are these awards aren’t as “political” as others, where financially interested parties or good friends make the decisions.
So Margo, you are wrong? Everyone who votes is a critic? This is from Filichia's article on the DDs.
Also, I asked this on another thread but can't get an answer. Is the DDs a not-for-profit organization and do proceeds go to charity?

And Marc Kudisch performed "Central Park" from SEE WHAT I WANNA SEE.
When Marc came out to sing that, I nearly passed out over the seat in front of me - that was very exciting - I love watching that man in action!

No, I'm not wrong. Filichia isn't a critic -- he writes a column three times a week for Theatremania, but he isn't one of their critics. He's very occasionaly filled in and written reviews, but that's a rarity. Barbara Siegel isn't a critic nor is BWW's Corine who has a website and is a voting member, but not a critic. As I said, MOST of the voters are not official critics for any website or publication -- they're journalists, editors, columnists and all sorts of other folks thrown in, but you won't see Brantley or Simon or Kissell on their membership rolls.
Thanks for clearing that up, Margo. I never should have doubted you. Why would Filichia say something that is so blatantly untrue?
