I think the criticism came from Lady Braxton - who said she had not seen nor will ever see the film version. She didn't say what her problems with the film were. And, since she she didn't see it, it would have to be based on what she read about it - the changes to the score, the story and the casting. She was not pressed on her complaints and no one on the reunion identified what complaints Braxton had.

There were several issues:
1.) The addition of "Listen" and the Oscar push for Beyonce, not J-Hud
2.) Jimmy's death
3.) Almost all of Act 2 being rewritten to focus around Deena.

Posted: 6/16/21 at 6:20pmYeah, controversy seems like a strong word. Unless there’s something I don’t know about, the comments seemed to allude to simple displeasure with the choices made in the adaptation. Displeasure many hardcore fans of the stage musical, myself included, seem to share.
