the lighting looks great, and I cannot wait to see this show (as well as the new ones comin to Ldn!!!)
There's also an opening night interview video on whatsonstage.com ... Elaine Paige seemed very pleased with the new production

She sounds great this Eva.
Bravo, West End.
Eh, Madonna in the movie was good, but she's a pop star.
What can you expect from a pop star whose life show includes a cone bra?

The set design is fantanstic. I really want to see this (despite my hatred for ALW).

Posted: 6/23/06 at 5:06pmBoy, with the acception of Guys and Dolls, the British are really doing wonders with revivals of late (Sweeney, SITPWG, now Evita). i really hope both Sunday and Evita get transfers. US revivals have been so weak of late.

I think transfers been pretty equal.
You guys have Mary Poppins, Sweeney Todd, History Boys
And we are getting Spamalot, Wkd, Avenue Q

I'm not so very impressed with Elena's voice here... Maybe it's the recording? It sounds fine enough to me, but nothing approaching outstanding. She certainly seems to be dynamic in the part, though, judging from the montages. Nice kicks.
The production looks more "literal" like the film did (as far as sets, lighting, costumes, etc.). Nothing like the original "representational" concepts.
This is not your father's Evita!

I actually think Elena's voice, though perhaps not as powerful, is maybe even better for the part than Patti's. Something about her appearance is so...violent, malevolent. And the reviews all claim she's just dripping with star power. the voice isn't pretty, or powerful, but it's very raw - i like it a lot.
And as for "A New Argentina", I'm betting it sounds like Julie Covington's.

Posted: 6/23/06 at 11:12pmYuck. I hope not. Covington's A NEW ARGENTINA is so weak.

There is NOTHING weak about Covington's EVITA - she plays her as a strident bitch and as much as you may dislike her vocal quality, she has no problem screeching out those notes.
I'd actually be very happy if Elena Roger were a shade closer to Covington's portrayal than LuPones. I see the show in a week so I'll let you know

There is NOTHING pleasant about listening to Covington screech out A NEW ARGENTINA.
But I am actually glad that Elena isn't a carbon copy of LuPone.

Oh, I agree. She is effective.
But when I have headphones in my ears, that is not something I want to hear blasting through my ear drums.

"Ok, not to sound mean-spirited, but what the heck happened to Philip Quast? He looks twice his normal size. He used to be kinda hunky...."
I know what you mean, tophertilson. I was expecting him to look as he did in the LES MIERSABLES 10th anniversary concert special. I agree he was hunky, and I have the soiled linens to prove it. Uh, maybe that was a little TMI. Whatever.

Re Philip Quast... don't forget it's over 10 years since the TAC of Les Mis -- people do change a bit... I can assure you he still looks pretty darn good.
I saw him at the stage door last Friday night, coming out with his bicycle.
My visit to Evita was the very first time I had ever seen a production of the show. I thought it was excellent. Elena Roger deserves every accolade she has received. She's a tiny powerhouse on that stage. I've seen comments elsewhere about Matt Rawle being "terrible" -- no such thing. He's cocky, arrogant and funny. Mr. Quast was also excellent. I'm going to see the show again at the end of July, and it seems like I'll be seeing the Alternate Evita, Abbie Osman.

I like the set design and feel of this show way more than the recent Evita National Tour - which I'm is a carbon copy of the original Evita by Prince.
I can't wait to hear the recording. It seems like a great, fun show. If any Brits are reading this, how is the show selling in the West End? Is it a hit?

Posted: 6/24/06 at 9:02amDoes anyone know if they have "set" Roger's weekly perfomance dates? I know in previews, they hadn't worked out which days her alternate performs the role.
