Question about the Tonys...im a bit unfamiliar with how it all works...but can actors from WICKED be nominated even though Idina and Kristen already were? Or is it always just OBC?
Thanks!

Nope. A show can only be nominated in the season it opens.
Although, with the replacement TONY, someone could win. Doubt it though.
I'm giving Best Musical to JERSEY BOYS.

Is it me, or does it seem the more interesting competitions are for the actors.
JERSEY BOYS should win best musical, but there is a definite possibility of an upset from THE COLOR PURPLE - despire how inferior it is to the former.
TARZAN will absolutely not receive a nomination for best musical. No chance in hell.
I'm surprised no one's mentioned a possible Featured Actress in a Musical nomination for Megan Lawrence (The Pajama Game). After how many people have said she's amazing in the show and practically steals it, I figure she's got a good shot..
Best Musical - The Color Purple*
Jersey Boys
Tarzan
Drowsey Chaperone
Lestat (I love the show and think if there is a 5th nomination Lestat will be honored before Ring of Fire)
Best Revival - Sweeney Todd* (Though Three Penny will give it a run for its money)
Three Penny Opera
The Pajama Game
Best Director - John Doyle*
Lighting - Lestat(it was a show of all lighting to create much of the mood)
BEST ACTOR : Michael Cerveris* (This is a very close race I think)
John Lloyd Young
Hugh Panaro
Harry Connick Jr.
Alan Cumming
BEST ACTRESS: Patti LuPone*
LaChanze
Maria Friedman
Kelli O'Hara
Chita Rivera (just for the fact that shes Chita Rivera)
Best Featured Actor - Mano wins so there is no need to list any competition. He is locked for sure.
Best Featured Actoress: Cyndi Lauper* (so many great things have been said and Sutton has her tony already and I think they will pass her up)
Sutton Foster
Donna Lynn Champlin
Carolee Carmello (Her part isnt super big so I think shes a better fit in her) or Allison Fischer (shes too young but deserves a nod)
Anyone think any of the Tarzan leads or featured actors/actresses will get nominated? Jenn Gambatese or Josh Strickland for leads; Shuler Hensley, Chester Gregory or Merle Dandridge for featured roles? I know it hasn't opened officially yet, but for those of you who have seen it...just wondering.
Shuler will probably get a nod but I doubt anyone else because the races are so tight. I think Tarzan has a gret shot at best chorography but not the performances.
TARZAN
WILL
GET
NOTHING.
Just wait and see.
I swear to god. If Color Puke wins best musical over Jersey Boys AND The Drowsy Chaperone, I will go to the Tony Commitee and slap each of them one by one. Oh, and don't even get me started on TCP winning best score. Drowsy should win that by leaps and bounds.
I do think Stephen Lynch will get some Best Actor consideration for The Wedding Singer and I wouldn't be surprised if Amy Spanger managed to grab a nod for Feature Actress just because of the way that character is written; it should be a real showcase for her.
This is the WORST year in recent memory for original scores, but out of the possible nominees, THE COLOR PURPLE does indeed have a better score than any other original show - and second would be THE WEDDING SINGER. The original scores this year are just pitiful.
Oh no QMAN03! I saw Drowsy and enjoyed it--but BEST SCORE??? I thought the score was one of the weakest I've heard ever! TDC actors have some shots at Tonys here--Bob Martin, Sutton Foster, and Beth Leavel--but I'm sorry, I strongly disagree about the score.
I really don't think Drowsy has too big of a shot at winning best score. Granted I haven't seen the show yet and have only the words of others to back me up (words that I'd love to disagree with by the way), but the music has been reported to be mediocre and forgettable save a few songs. From what I've heard off of clips I tend to agree. However everything about the book seems lovable. So that's where I think Drowsy has a shot.
If Tarzan gets a nom for Best Musical, I will weep with despair
And it will reflect very badly on the artistic reputation of Broadway and the Tonys
I asked specifically about the acting in Tarzan as I've heard good buzz about them--Josh and Chester Gregory in particular.
What Tarzan deserves and what Tarzan will get based on its being Disney are too very different things. However I would love to see the Tony's change this conception I have here.
Bob Martin is nearly a lock, Beth Leavel has a chance, and I would rule Sutton Foster out.
Stephen Lynch consideration? Yes, all actors are given consideration, but I don't think he'll snag a nomination. I think the best actor nominations will pan out to be:
Michael Cerveris, SWEENEY TODD
Alan Cumming, THE THREEPENNY OPERA
John Lloyd Young, JERSEY BOYS
Harry Connick Jr., THE PAJAMA GAME
Bob Martin, DROWSY CHAPERONE
The only person that might be iffy at this point is Alan Cumming, but we shall see what kind of reviews he gets. While his performance isn't up to par with his fellow potential nominees, he's certainly better than the likes of Hugh Panaro, Stephen Lynch, and John Strickland.
Agreed on the best actor race munk. Your nominees are the same as mine and I do agree with your view on Cumming as well. I hope Cerveris takes it, think Young will take it, and refuse to count Martin out yet.
Whoever asked about TARZAN acting nominees, absolutely not. Not a single chance.
That was me that asked, Munk, based on hearing nothing but positives on the performances of Josh Strickland and Chester Gregory, and to a lesser degree, Merle Dandridge. Thought maybe, esp. if its not nominated in other categories, one of them might get a nod.
I really have to contest that Tarzan will get some recognition, even if its very little, in the performance and bigger categories. Time will tell though.
Wouldn't it be more likely to get nods for technical stuff? And maybe for Shuler Hensley, cause that man can make anything great.
I think Shuler is a shoe in and Chester Gregory is a strong possibility. But in a season as competitive in the performance categories as this one, a lot will come down to who had the best material to work with.
