Wow! I had no idea he could sing, but he sounds great in those clips! Count me in the group who are excited by this casting, possibly the most interesting casting for this film yet.
How come no one is complaining about Hugh Jackman being too conventionally attractive to play Valjean?
Because this is the Eddie Redmayne thread.
Can we just all rejoice that it really isn't Nick Jonas?
I'm surprised yet thrilled about this casting choice. Actually, it makes me more interested in seeing the film. He's a great actor. Glad it's him and not a hot guy with mediocre talent.
Unconventional and beautiful. I think he'll be quite attractive in the film.

Oh, I have been for hours.
I've been trying to decide how I feel about this, and I have concluded that it is a great choice. The casting of Anne Hathaway (and most other roles, for that matter) already seem on the verge of Too Hollywood, but Eddie seems like a genuinely talented actor and beautiful singer. His face confuses me, but it is certainly stunning, if unconventional.
And slightly off-topic, but does anyone know how the accents will be done? British accents for all? Natural accents? French? (If Anne fakes a "British accent" in another movie I might lose it).

I don't see why Marius has to be conventionally handsome, he's very charismatic on screen IMO, it should work fine.

Great actor, great choice.
In fact it's the first piece of casting that actually has me excited!
Me too, tazber. Although, I'd be very excited about Jackman and Crowe if they would switch roles. At least dramatically speaking.

"I'd be very excited about Jackman and Crowe if they would switch roles"
The more I've thought about that, the more I agree.
That prospect still isn't too dramatically exciting, but it's certainly more dramatically exciting than what's going on now.
I'd be more excited if Crowe could sing.

Check out Crowe as Eddie in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" in 1988 in Sydney.

BTW, here is a clip of Eddie singing All The Love I Have from The Beautiful Game (or whatever it's being called now).
He sounds perfect for Marius here.
Also, there is a great little thriller that he starred in with Toni Collette called Murderous Intent (and for some reason listed on imdb as Like Minds).
I definitely recommend checking it out.

Some of the replies under the video say that's not Eddie singing it's someone named David Shannon.

For anyone interested in Russell Crowes voice, check out The Crowe/Doyle songbook.
Eddie played the Emcee in a production of Cabaret I choreographed - I can assure you he can sing, and is an amazing actor. This is very exciting casting!
I expected them to go with someone more like Nicholas Hoult:
I like, Eddie, though, and I look forward to seeing what he does with the role.
Maybe Michael Fassbender could play Enjolras.

I'd really like to see Lucy Hale play Eponine, but if that doesn't happen, I think Evan Rachel Wood could handle it, too.
Her voice has improved a lot since Across the Universe. I think the breathing techniques she learned to properly match her lip movements for the opera scenes in Mildred Pierce really helped:

A few posts up I reported that Evan Rachel Wood was apparently offered the role of Eponine but had to turn it down.
Nice
Evan Rachel Wood had to turn down the role because of impending dental surgery? That can't be right. And since when does Eponine need to have all her teeth?
From TMZ, 9/7/2011:
http://www.tmz.com/2011/09/07/evan-rachel-wood-tooth-elbow-mouth-face-cracked-hit-dancing-movie-mildred-pierce-movie-premiere-tour/
Evan Rachel Wood took a serious shot to the face last night in Europe -- in the form of a wild elbow that actually KNOCKED OUT one of her teeth ... TMZ has learned.
Sources close to Wood tell us, the actress was hanging out with some friends in Paris -- and decided to hit up some local spot with music and dancing.
We're told one of the dancers at the establishment got a little loose with the elbows -- and accidentally connected with Wood's mouth, knocking out a tooth ... and giving her one fat lip.
Wood -- who's traveling the world to promote her new movie "Ides of March" and her HBO miniseries "Mildred Pierce" -- will continue on the tour ... but sources tell us she's already meeting with a dentist to get a replacement tooth.

The article even includes a picture of the knocked-out tooth.
Why would putting in a fake tooth cause her to turn down Cosette? They don't start filming until February. It's November now.
Sounds like someone's rumor speculation is way off.
I have to admit that Eddie doens't look at all attractive in many of the photos posted of him. But, like many great performers, he can look quite beautiful, or not, and seems to transition between both with ease. In Pillars of the Earth he came across as a young matinee idol.. More importantly, although older, he has a callow innocence ideal for Marius.
