Smaxie , thank you for so eloquently stating exactly what I wanted to say about Company. I agree with everything you said, and have nothing to add. Company really is, not only one of Sondheim's best shows, but one of the best in the history of musical theater.

Nia, after seeing it, I think the chances are kind of slim, especially while Sweeney is still running, because even though they've incorporated the actor-as-musician concept into the plot and the atmosphere of the show, it's just too similar. I don't think the lack of transfer that'll probably happen would have to do with the production not being good by any measure, but because of the similarity. I wouldn't even blame it on the fact that Company's "dated," because this production has made it pretty timeless, I think.
(Oh, and he looked like he was greatly enjoying the hardcore cymbal playing. He looked like a little boy, totally amused by how loud they were, crashing them over someone's head. And then he'd sort of dance around hitting it with a drumstick...brush... thing. I was in stitches.)

Namo, for you, next time I shall be more specific. re: Emcee visits Cincinnati: John Doyle's COMPANY

In response to the discussion about Company's structure, I don't think I meant incomplete the way it's apparently being taken; I don't mean that because it's non-linear -- that I was fine with. I think it just sort of somewhat randomly meanders around throughout these lives, and while it makes its point well, I felt like something was just not there -- the more I think about it, the thing I can best put my finger on is a clear resolution for Bobby, though I definitely understand why it isn't that way.

ljay, the orchestrations don't sound all that scaled-down, but they do sound smaller. They're certainly modernized, but like I said before, because the physicality of the production is not period, the music fits right with it. Simple, yet very elegant.

Question.

Since TICK TOCK is gone, is the part where Bobby and April are in bed together (which took place during Tick Tock) still in this production?

That scene must've been amazing live with Donna. and Charlotte!

Well I'm glad to hear the orchestrations aren't too different. But still even on the Broadway revival album, it just does not sound the same. It's missing a lot of the amazing strings. Though I think TICK TOCK sounds even better on the revival CD. One of the few orchestrations I prefer on the revival album. Updated On: 3/18/06 at 04:03 PM

Yes. Sort of.

The piano is kind of analagous to the Sweeney coffin; it doubles as a lot of things.... or, more accurately, as representations of them.

April tells the butterfly story, and Bobby tells the story about the girl he met in Miami, when he got lost looking for the motel, etc. Their going to bed is quite clearly implied, but obviously there's no bed. They kiss, leaning up against the piano. For a very long time. Then they sing Barcelona, presumably the next morning.

re: Emcee visits Cincinnati: John Doyle's COMPANY

There's a big display in the lobby with more production photos. I took some pictures of them, which I'll post later tonight. I just got home from the airport.

Question : Does this production take place in the 70's, or is modern day?

I'm pretty sure it's SUPPOSED to be contemporary. There are a few lines that are kind of dated, but it's not a big deal at all. It's definitely not in the 70's, though.

I'm sorry they're so reflective. I tried not using the flash, but they came out blurry.

No worries Em.
At least we folks who will not see this production have an idea of how it looks thanks to you!

I so wish I could get out to Cincinnati to see this show, but alas I don't have the money or the time off work right now to justify a trip like that. Oh well... please everyone post reviews after you have seen it. (Emcee, yours was fab.) I can only hope that this will end up on broadway with Raul leading the way! (*fingers crossed*)

The more I think about it, the more in love I fall.... with the production, which is truly brilliant, and with Raul's performance. So heartbreaking, affecting, and utterly perfect.
