I am an avid fan of Shameless, and I'm just now putting two and two together that Emmy Rossum (Fiona Gallagher) was Christine in the POTO movie?! This whole time I've been watching the show, I've been thinking she'd be an incredible Mimi. Anyone else feel this way?
She's excellent but 20 years too old for any character in Rent.
I hesitate to bring this up, because these sorts of conversations never go well on this board. But Mimi is traditionally played by a person of color. The character is Latina, though I know some black women have played the role. As far as I know, no white women have played the role in any major productions (or very few). I know I, and probably the Larsen estate, would prefer to keep it that way.

20 years too old?  So....she would have to be....10 years old to be in Rent?
The beautiful Renee Elise Goldsberry was 37 when she played Mimi.  People have played characters from the show in their 40's.
Cool, though.
I could maybe see her as Maureen, but not Mimi.
she has a too classical-sounding voice for RENT and many other contemporary shoes. she's great on Shameless though!
This has got to be a joke.
BTW, even though she's not a big name, Eva Noblezada would be a great Mimi.

???? To say she's too classical sounding is also debatable...because that would suggest she can sing at all. I will never forgive that movie for what it did to POTO. I own it and yet haven't seen it in a loooonngggg time because...ugh. Then the 25th Anniversary came on DVD and I've used that masterpiece to try to erase the film from my mind.
She's improved since but it's still not a voice I would call a great one, nor does she even LOOK like she could pass for Latina. Now as for age...Ok, so Mimi is stated to be 19 which we all know, but I've never had an issue with older ladies who at least read 19 doing it because it's obvious Mimi has seen some **** and has had to grow up fast and take care of herself. But I'd rather not see Emmy in anything ever again...I usually can see why someone is cast often but there are a few people who I just question how in the world they got there, and she's one of them.
She's white.
The end!
Move on. Dreamcast her as someone else.
Jonathan Pryce HAS to play Mimi in Rent

This is even more laughable than the idea of a white girl playing a Latina girl.
Come on, guys! Based on her work playing a corpse in Mystic River, she'd clearly nail the five seconds that it seems like Mimi is dead.
I'll save you all a lot of time and recommend not seeing Rent in the first place.

Of course. So cast a white Latina girl to play a Latina girl, not a white Russian/Jewish/Dutch/English girl to play a Latina.

I'm sorry, what?
Emmy Rossum does not even slightly have a classical sounding voice. Her voice is thin, breathy, and she sings her vowels horribly. She has grown as an actress over the years, but I never need to hear her sing in another musical again.

Those who are from Latin America mostly likely come from Spanish ancestry, who are white. What's so funny about that?
The real question is, why doesn't Emmy have an Emmy? I just got done watching Shameless Season 7, and damn, she' s still incredible.

It's a hilarious excuse for casting a white actress in a latina role.  Rossum has no Latin heritage.  Meanwhile, I can think of several actresses that come from actual latin heritage that would be better in the role.  It's not about the shade of their skin, but rather where their family originates.
I wasn't laughing at the idea that Latina's can be white.  If they are light-skinned or from Spain and they wish to be considered white, that's a different matter, but Rossum is definitely not of Latin heritage and therefore should not be in consideration to play Mimi.
