fun video looking at the upcoming Encores! production of Into the Woods. really cool to see Judy Kuhn in the video, I always thought she was probably high on the list of choices for the original cast playing Cinderella and would have done so had Chess not come to Broadway that same season
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
Not tremendously exciting news. Into the Woods is done all the time. If a good cast recording comes of it, great for fans of the show who want another recording (there are already many of them), I guess.
I suspect "No More" will be particularly emotional/poignant.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Know it may be on the nose given he already played one of Chip Zien’s other big roles, but I believe Brandon Uranowitz would be a perfect Baker. Also would like to see Jessie Mueller as Baker’s Wife.
Edit: I just realized Uranowitz will be too busy with Assassins. In that case, Santino Fontana would also be a fantastic Baker I imagine.
Maybe they can get Kate Shindle to do Bakers Wife again, as she did in the 2019 Town Hall production. Besides Joanna Gleason, Shindle was far and away the best actress I’ve ever seen play the role. She was phenomenal and I’d love for more people to get to see that.
Thought about it and here’s the actors that I believe are free who I’d want.
The Baker - Santino Fontana The Baker’s Wife - Jessie Mueller The Witch - Audra McDonald The Narrator/Mysterious Man - Boyd Gaines Cinderella - Betsy Wolfe Cinderella’s Prince - Will Chase Jack - Mike Faist Little Red Riding Hood - Hailey Kilgore
And if it’s any good hopefully it can translate into a new revival.
I agree this could be very big. Everyone loves Into the Woods, and given the number of great showcases it has and the fact that we’re coming out of this dry spell for theatre, they could definitely get some strong, big names here.
