I never really understood the Vanessa Williams casting in London. She turns 60 this weekend. Alaura/Carla is in her late 30s-40s. It's often cast a little younger (Dee Hoty, Lauren Mitchell, Jan Maxwell, Katherine Kelly [Donmar] were all in their mid 30s) -- the part is an homage to Faye Dunaway in Chinatown -- but 60 is pushing it. You need to be surprised that she is a mother of two. The role isn't a huge sing, but Vanessa sounded shaky at best in ANYONE CAN WHISTLE and seemed bored in POTUS. Her casting in London seemed more related to box office than anything, but we know from past data that she doesn't sell much in New York.
But let's see if this production actually comes to fruition.
