Absolutely -- what made Gyllenhaal so good was that he played Seymour as a person....not just a series of not-so-bright nerdy punchlines.....The one character who was broad and campy was Orrin....and that's the way he should be played....no subtlety needed.

"^Perhaps but to still Ellen Greene bring her Audrey to Broadway would be a fantastic thing. She would get a Tony nomination for sure."

Based on the raves, maybe a Tony win!

It would be great to see her get a Tony for the role...especially as (yikes) she didn't even win the Drama Desk Award for her performance in '83....although she was a nominee.

This was a special night....a very special event....but it strikes me that the demands of eight shows a week on the cast...and especially Ms. Greene...would be unrealistic....The role is vocally demanding....technically and in terms of sheer gumption....It would be akin to asking Patti LuPone to sing Eva Peron for eight shows a week...it was a physical triumph when she was in her 30s.... Opera stars don't do eight shows a week for a reason.

I don't think this is a super feasible transfer as-is. Aside from casting issues (Killam's on SNL, who knows what Gyllenhaal's got going on in Hollywood), there is also the question of whether Greene could sustain a run. 3 performances is one thing, three months is another.

I'm sure it would financially make sense, and there's people who would love to see it. But I kind of like that it's 3 performances then done. Make sit all the more special. Unpopular opinion, I know.

They can still get a great cast! Like Megan Hilty as Audrey would be a dream! I would say James M. Iglehart or Billy Porter as Audrey 2, but they're still in their musicals

There are audio clips on tumblr, and WOW. Ellen Greene is flawless. Gyllenhaal is also particularly impressive. SO jealous of those of you who get to see her in person.

I'm not sure if a transfer is feasible. If anything maybe they could bring this back in the fall/spring for a longer engagement? Maybe two weeks?

Also am I crazy or is 'Suddenly Seymour' in a lower key?

This production will never transfer. I was just saying it SHOULD. But it's three perfoamce run will always be very special. Well, at least the first performance will be where the audience wasn't made up of self centered millennials out to prove they're the biggest fan in the theater.

I saw today's 2 PM performance and loved it. Ellen Greene missed her big cue heading into the finale of "Suddenly Seymour" because, I think, she was really caught up in the emotions and the moment. Jake Gyllenhaal handled it beautifully and without skipping a beat. G&G worked really well together.

A telling quote from the New York Times review.

"But there was also a pervasive air of giddy ease and a connoisseur’s passion that summoned memories of Encores! productions in their early days, in the 1990s, before they turned into overgroomed auditions for Broadway transfers."

I could see a weekend return engagement in Los Angeles. In fact, I'd like that! Encores! Little Shop of Horrors Review Thread

If this gets transferred without Killam, I'd love to see them get another quirky "hey it's that guy" comedian in the roles to fill his shoes. I wonder how versatile Jim Rash can be.

Actually, if we're just throwing names around and being silly, I'd kinda like to see comedian and voice actor Tom Kenny do the part. His Simon Petrikov/Ice King from "Adventure Time" already comes across as a bizarre alternate-universe Orin in his affable sociopathy and misogyny.

McHale could be a brilliant Orin, but I've never seen him really step outside his persona enough to imagine him playing eight other comic figures. Honestly, though, you give me ANY "Community" alum in the role and I'll jump for joy. Danny Pudi, Donald Glover- hell, I'd even sit through Chevy Chase.

This was so much fun tonight!

My friend equated the audience reaction to a Michael Jackson concert - and I'd agree. It was crazy!
