No, last year GLENGARY GLEN ROSS was a slight surprise, too.

The awards weren't as cut and dry last year. Sure, it was obvious that SPAMALOT was going to win, but the supporting categories were wide open last year.

Would it be Ramirez or O'Hara or Celia?
Dan Fogler, Matt Morrison, etc?

I don't mind when tehy're predictable as long as what is truly the best show wins.

I think the intention is to reward the best performances and productions, isn't it? It's not a box of Cracker Jacks. But perhaps I'm mistaken...

I remember reading a list of predictions and Sara Ramirez had like a 90% of the votes. They released a list of Tony voters before the Tonys, do you remember? it was listed on this site. Dan Fogler had also over a 50%. Victoria Clark had 100% i remember.

I agree with most of their predictions.

Although I believe that Patti is close to a lock, I think that LaChanze should be considered a spoiler.

I think that Jim Dale is the favorite, although I hope that Mano or Hoff win.

In regards to surprises last year. I was very [PLEASANTLY] surprised that Liev Schreiber won.

They're slightly skewed towards Jersey Boys, yes, but they're smartly noting the out-of-town Tony vote, which almost ALWAYS pops those big awards towards commercially viable, touring shows.
Avenue Q was a major upset over Wicked given Wicked's bona-fide box office magic. Of course, it's also one of those iron-clad shows which prove that you don't need awards to sell.

Munk, I totally disagree about last year. At least in the musical categories, it was the most predictable thing ever. The only one I predicted incorrectly was scenic design (I thought Chitty). Everything else was no surprise.

This year is a bit more unpredictable--really, nothing can be as predictable as last year IMO.

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli

Last year not predictable???
There were exactly two surprises: Liev Schrieber and Bill Irwin. I called every other category.

That being said, having seen Jersey Boys this week, it will be a sad day if/when that wins best musical.

As much as I want Jersey Boys to win, TDC just might pull off the upset like it did at the Drama Desk Awards. The awards for actors/actresses in a musical seem clear. John Lloyd Young(JB), Lupone(ST), Dale(TPO) & Leavel(TC). Though I would love it if Manoel upset Dale.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Unlike the Osacrs, the Tony's seem to have no problem awarding debut performances. John Lloyd Young is probably going to win this award even though Cerveris deserves it more. I liked what a lot of the actor's had to say in interviews about comparing all of the performances. Many felt that there was no way to determine who was better this year because all but the charcters they played were such polar opposites of each other.

I love Jersey Boys, but considered a "spoiler" for scenic design?

Arghh! Grammar pet peeve #1: your vs you're. "Your" is a possessive pronoun. "You're" is the contraction of "you are." <<

I hope LaChanze wins the Tony just because it'll turn many people's world upside down. That, and because I love upsets!
