I'd have much less of a problem with the line being discourteous if it made sense and was in character. It failed on both counts and was a cheap shot. If you want to write something that edgy, it should ring true. Instead, it rang supremely false.

It may have been perfectly in character for Ana, a seasoned (though thus far uncelebrated) pro, to think of Foster replacing Dilly in Millie at a time like this.

But it was COMPLETELY out of character for Ana to refer to the incident as suspending Erin's career. She knows better. If anything, one might think that Ana might have been comforted by Erin having a pretty damned successful career after the Millie incident (a career Ana could have only dreamed of a few weeks ago), rather than dismissing Erin's career - falsely - as being on break ever since.

Hell, people doing things out of character, people who at first seem somewhat endearing suddenly becoming excessively, even relentlessly, annoying...... that has always been the problem with SMASH.

Compared to Kristin Chenoweth, Sutton Foster, Laura Benanti and others, Erin Dilly really hasn't had that exciting of a career. I'm actually surprised they used her name, because she's not really that well known.

I believe that was the point Anna was trying to make, that since Sutton took over she hasn't been popular outside of the Broadway community.

Not only do most people (i.e., the general TV audience) not know Erin Dilly, they don't know Sutton Foster or 'Thoroughly Modern Millie' or Laura Benanti or Sam Mendes' 'Cabaret' or any of the names dropped on this show.
The Dilly comment was an example of Problem #6,729,932 with SMASH: It's inaccurate even with the stuff pulled from real life. For example, Lin-Manuel Miranda's snipe about BOMBSHELL that "the tourists love it." Like the tourists didn't love BRING IT ON...or IN THE HEIGHTS? And then Christian Borle's character snipes back something about BRING IT ON closing, like it was a big flop. Didn't it extend its limited run?
As a P.S. I really think Buntrock could have made his point more delicately. Doesn't he want his kids to read it?

IMO, that depends how you define, "exciting". If you're working and you love what you're doing, that can be pretty exciting. "Fame" is always just a byproduct of visibility. It's not required for a successful definition.

If a person requires "fame" to define an "exciting career", they can marry a Kardashian (or just date one). Updated On: 5/14/13 at 10:51 AM

Erin is a former co-worker whom I consider a friend. Having been on the receiving end, both personally and alongside an SO, of circumstances like Erin's TMM experiences ,I fully appreciate that it leaves a sore spot that never heals.
Show business is a cruel motha'.

OTOH, who was it that Alice Cooper stole the "There's no such thing as bad publicity" line from?

Screw 'em, Erin. We know who and what you are and we love you.

Erin is amazing and one of the nicest people on the planet. Hopefully she can just say "F*CK it" and forget about this. She knows she's better than SMASH ever was.

...and yet, "That's Showbiz...". Situations like this happen to many, many actors. If that sore spot "never heals", it will always remain visible (metaphorically). Move on and move up.

I'm talking more about the projects that she's offered. Nothing on her resume is a new project. It's all revivals or movie-based characters that have been created by someone else.

Well, technically Smash was right: Erin Dilly is still on break from Thoroughly Modern Millie...

I've never been less than impressed with Erin Dilly in any show she's done, and I can understand why her husband and friends might be a little upset about the context of her mention in Smash. Thing I want Erin and her fans to know: those who are in positions of power in the industry know the truth, and those who get their information from Smash are not in positions of power in the industry.

However, anyone criticizing Krysta Rodríguez for reading lines written for her should probably butt out of this conversation--and all conversations--forever. Her job is to literally say and do things she doesn't necessarily agree with for money. I can't believe this concept would need to be explained to anyone, let alone another actor like Michael McGrath. If you have a criticism of her line in that scene, make sure to aim it at the truly responsible party: the writer.

Which could apply to Sutton Foster, also. It's kinda worked out well for her.

It's not so much do what you like
as it is that you like what you do'
Mama said, 'Darling, don't make such a drama.
A little less thinking, a little more feeling' -
I'm just quoting Mama!"

Sutton was in Drowsy Chaperone which was new material. Plus, she's now starring in the tv show Bunheads which is a new character creation.

Well, that certainly was a soap opera line, in case anyone was confused about what type of show SMASH was trying to be.

I do find this particular thread entertaining, but for all that Smash got factually wrong in its two seasons, it's ironic they would choose to use Erin Dilly's name as a way to invoke non-fiction. It's like whichever writer chose to do so, had an ax to grind. It's not as if Thoroughly Modern Millie happened recently. Granted not everyone would know who she is, but I've certainly seen some shows she has been in.

And she's working at the Muny this summer in Mary Poppins.

So very stalled.

It's okay, Erin will have the last laugh. She already is.

True. Two seasons of Smash and I don't remember one Jeremy Piven fish joke. It seems to me like that incident would be wide open for a joke.

IMHO, Erin has had exactly the career she wants. Much like Jennifer Laura Thompson, she devotes a lot of time to her young family and shows up and kills it on Broadway whenever she wants to.

Unlike many of the characters on Smash (a pool which recently and unfortunately has expanded to include the Tony-obsessed Tom), not everyone in the theater wants fame at the expense of all else. Actually, there are plenty of stage actors who will work for far less money in smaller gigs, just to feel like they're doing good work instead of commercial crap.

Kind of a bummer that "Let Me Be Your Star" was the founding anthem of this show, because many, many theater performers are just as satisfied with quality (hopefully accompanied by a liveable wage) as they are with being known/recognized.
