I know that Erin Mackey has performed the role of Glinda lots of times over the last three years and I'm sure she was good last night. But did anyone go and what was her performance like?

Posted: 8/12/09 at 2:13pmI didn't even know it was her first night! I attempted the lottery yesterday for about the 10th time and I, once again, lost. One of these days, I will WIN the Wicked lottery.

I love Erin Mackey. I saw her a handful of times in Chicago and her acting in that role is fantastic. Unfortunately, her high-soprano parts are pretty shakey. . I always sat there wondering if her voice would crack. . it was that close. Luckily it never did, but I wonder if it has/will?
Luckily it was only ever noticeable during the Chenowithisms in the show. . so she's flawless after "No One Mourns The Wicked."

I saw Erin and Dee during the last month-or-so of the Chicago production.
I love Erin . . her higher notes are a little weak. . but she's fantastic!
Dee is a snore and a half. I've seen her 4 times and she was the poor man's Kristy Cates.

Posted: 8/12/09 at 5:11pmWhile it's true that Dee is not the most exciting person ever to play the role, vocally she was light years ahead of Kristy Cates. Kristy's rabid fans were much more entertaining than Kristy ever could have been singing Elphaba completely in her head voice. When I reviewed her years ago (unfavorably) on BWW after seeing her, I got veiled death threats via Private messages.

I know what you mean, californiasnow.
Hell,
I once made a comment that an actor, term to be used loosely here because I know this individual will read it, had repeatedly and intentionally missed a cue while attempting to draw focus and how it endangered the completeion of another actor's quick-change. I made no peronal attack or snarky comment, I made that note and stated that such an act can lead to being written up to the union and eventually dismissal and was surprised that hadn.t happened yet. WELL.. months later, said individual took it upon himself to flip the bird at me from center stage during curtain and corner me against a wall (while being twice my size) in front of a crowd of audience members and say that I deserve to be gutted like a fish and left to die and that no one would miss me.. and that he would like to do it himself.

I really don't understand the hate for Kristy Cates' voice. Her "Wizard and I" was a little less intense than others I've seen (besides Dee. . .boring there too). I thought her "Look to the Western Sky!!" was the best of any I've seen (in person or Youtube.)

Kristy Cates is absolutely the worst Elphaba I've ever seen. Hands down. Words cannot describe that train wreck of a performance. She makes Dee Roscioli look like Meryl Streep. I agree 100% with californiaisnow. I also reviewed her unfavorably here, and received a flurry of angry PM's from her "fans" all informing me that Kristy was "sick" the night I went to see her, and that I should lay off of her, "or else." I take solace in the fact that Kristy Cates is now playing the role of a cow in a free children's musical.
I'm sure the hate mail is going to pour in to my PM's now.

"I saw Erin and Dee during the last month-or-so of the Chicago production."
How did you manage to see Erin with Dee at the end of the Chicago run when Erin left in early May 2008 and the show ended in Jan 2009?

Posted: 8/12/09 at 7:06pmYeah, if you saw the last month or so of the Chicago production, you saw Annaleigh Ashford as Glinda.

Posted: 8/12/09 at 7:59pmKristy Cates was a strong singer, however she overacted way too much especially during "The Wizard and I." Dee brought more vulnerability to the role.

I was there last night...went in with extremely low expectations, and ended up really enjoying the performances by both Dee and Erin.
It was my 25th time seeing Wicked (I think) and while Dee and Erin are certainly not the best Elphaba and Glinda, they aren't the worst either.
Dee has an extremely strong voice and her "Wizard and I" and "No Good Deed" were fantastic. Her acting, on the other hand, was hit or miss. I felt like she rushed through many of the lines that others (Julia Murney for example) got huge laughs for. Overall, though, she did a very good job in the role and I was pleasantly surprised with her performance, after all the negative reviews I had read on here.
Erin did a wonderful job, especially considering that this was her first time ever on a Broadway stage. She made some good acting choices during a few scenes that got laughs (she was very well recieved last night, especially for a Tuesday evening performance - maybe lots of friends and family in the audience?). Her "Popular" was very funny and her "For Good" with Dee was excellent - you could tell they have developed a rapport - it was emotional for both of them.
The show is still in excellent shape, even with these no-names (who are now below the title by the way). Rondi Reed and PJ Benjamin are excellent (as always), and even Kevin Kern seemed better than the last time I saw him.
Looking forward to hearing other people's thoughts about the current cast.
