Aw....that was really nice. Particularly Lauper getting chocked up at the end.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

What a great promo film; I fancied seeing this anyway but this is really the icing on the cake. I also think that, charismatic as Harvey F is, Cyndi Lauper is a completely winning frontperson for the show -she is adorable and authentic. The bit where she tears up is a joy. Love her, and love what I've heard so far of her score. Hoping to see the show in October.

Would you say that it's the favorite? Much as I enjoyed and admired Matilda as a whole I think it only has about 4 really good songs, the rest of it is serviceable.

I didn't realize until this video that Cyndi could be the first woman to win Best Score - I guess solo? - so that is pretty cool

NICE! I really was blah about both Kinky and Matilda. But I do love CL and HF and I want them to win. I want them to clean up.

I've always been cheering on Kinky Boots for the Tony's, but now that I know that a woman has never won before i DEFINITELY want Kinky to win!

What I also find impressive about Lauper is that very few of her early hits were written by her. Only She Bop and Time After Time (and the forgotten Goonies song) were co-written by her, and even her recent songs mostly have co-writers. But, over the years, she has honed her craft and found her voice.
She also choked up when talking to Patrick Healy of the New York Times:
"Ms. Lauper, a Queens native, began crying on Tuesday as she described finding success so close to home. 'My whole life I’ve been chasing work around the whole world, but I never would have imagined that I only had to look in my own backyard to find something like this,' she said."
I wonder which one came first (the clip or the Healy quote). I'm guessing it was the Healy quote, and she knew she wasn't going to be able to say it again in the clip without choking up.

The ABC quote is from ABC's "Person of the Week" segment of the ABC's Nightly News broadcast on Friday May 3rd. The interview actually took place on May 2nd.

Cyndi Lauper will be the first woman to ever win for best score in her own right (previous winners were part of a team). I think she's going to take it, personally (and deserves it, richly). Ironically, my favorite songs of hers are the ones she wrote (she didn't write "True Colors"?)

Okay, its a good score, and much better than most pop artist's attempts at writing for Broadway.
But please. Its far from a "great" score, let alone a great, GREAT one. And yes, I know its opinion, but when you attach such superlatives to such things, in slowly lowers the standards of what a truly "great" score should be.
I have no problem, however, with Cyndi winning the Tony, as I think Minchin's score is merely "good" as well (though I think Matilda a finer show).

I get the feeling Matilda has somewhat believed it's own hype coming over from London and may have gone into awards season a little nonchalant. Meanwhile, Kinky Boots has come out swinging so hard you'd think Eileen Rand was behind it.

Cyndi Lauper deserves to win. That's all there is to it. She has written one of the best scores I have heard in a LONG time. I like Matilda's score, but Kinky Boots's score is something else.

I think it's a sure thing to say at this point that Kinky Boots will win best musical.

I don't know Kinky Boots very well so I might regret posting this in 2 months time but it does seem to me to be a pretty pedestrian, 'feel good' score (as opposed to a triumph). What exactly do you guys like about it? Meh. I feel it is unusual for this this forum not to back the artistic alternative.

I've said this in another thread aboaut the two shows (Both of which I've seen, neither did I LOVE, but liked both, liking Kinky a little more.): The audience reaction in KINKY is insane. There is so much love for this show, every song rec'd applause like I've never heard sustained throughout an evening. I cannot say the same of the audience reaction during Matilda.
Actually, I will liken the energy I felt in the theater the night I saw the show (I believe it was the night after opening) was more like the energy one would expect at a closing night performance. Palpable. A-MA-ZING.

Having just seen Matilda, I personally think the problems some people have with the Matilda music - no matter if it is "superior" or not..is that you can't understand the words a good part of the time. Maybe it's different in various parts of the theater, but from where I was sitting, I was dealing with #1 really loud sound volume which gave the words some extra blur/echo feature (which made dialogue even hard to understand) and #2 the British accents were really uneven. I can honestly say I missed at least half the lyrics and a good amount of dialogue due to poor sound.
That's really distracting when you are trying to get into a show and enjoy what is being presented. It's one thing to say the music is superior when listening to a recording or reading the score/lyrics - but it's entirely different thing to say it's superior after just hearing it at a performance where the sound is so unreliable.
Kinky Boots = certainly the music is not as "complicated" in style (though I loved individual songs in both shows). But as even Ben Brantley said in his review, Cyndi Lauper really knows how to sell a song and KB has the best closing number since Hairspray. I don't think the current production of Matilda is doing its score any favors...during the performance I saw at least.

It doesn't surprise me that several posters described a monotonous effect that left them unengaged or feeling flat.
Kinky Boots's score is actually much more sophisticated. It references a range of genres -- R&B, hard core rock, gospel, disco, and ballad. Each one is used as a "voice" that articulates a character, creates their world, and propels the story of their encounter. The styles start out seeming incongruous, like the characters, but by the end are woven together like the plot line. It makes you FEEL the story. Although trumpeting her musical intelligence isn't part of her "schtick," I think Lauper is a great musician and knows what she's doing.
