Overall, I was disappointed because I think I was expecting something completely different than how it turned out.
Nikki Blonsky: she did decently. I wanted to hear more, it was just on one level for me. She doesn't seem to go beyond just singing the songs.
John Travolta: don't kill me for saying this, but I personally don't like the songs that his role had to sing in the first place. You're Timeless to Me is just not one of my favorites. I will have to see him in the movie though because this part is much more acting based
Zac Efron: eh. I had already heard Ladies Choice before, but the actual songs from the show I was disappointed. Of course, I am SLIGHTLY biased on my opinion when it comes to Link Larkin, so take that with a grain of salt. I was weary that he came from high school musical because I hated that movie, but he's looking better than I thought... ?
James Marsden: interesting role for him, IMO. I think he did a decent job, but as previously mentioned... it is a pretty small role, but he does a nice job interpreting Corny.
Amanda Bynes: I was really disapopinted. Maybe it'll change once I see the movie? this role is hilarious in the show, so I was excited and I was interested to see how Amanda Bynes would do because I don't mind her as an actress. The singing was completely under and yeah again with the bias, but I was disappointed in how the singing turned out.
Elijah Kelly: his voice is not bad by any means. I think he was definitely one of the better singers on the CD. It's still hard for me to see him as Seaweed, but maybe that'll change with actually watching the movie.
Queen Latifah: I've been hearing her in bits and pieces to start off with, so I wasn't too surprised with what I heard. She did a decent job too IMO. I'm not the biggest fan of the role or Queen Latifah, but I wanted more heavy sounding than what Queen Latifah did.
Michelle Pfeiffer: I first don't like this version of Miss Baltimore Crabs. It was much worse than the original version, which I didn't even like in the first place. I was actually expecting something much greater out of Michelle because I knew before this she could sing decently.
Brittany Snow: maybe she's much more acting based in the movie, but hello? Talk about not singing at all. Amber is such a great role, but I think it was either downplayed in the movie or Brittany Snow couldn't handle the singing aspect, which means she shouldn't have been cast in the first place.
I may sound really negative, but I am just trying to be completely honest. I am still supporting the movie, but I just think that I know what to expect when I see the movie. I just think that I'll have to go in and expect more acting versus the singing that I know the show for more. But please dont' get offended and take what I say with a grain of salt. I loved the original recording and its hard for me not to compare... but there it is.
Marc,
Correct me if I'm wrong but, I remember reading an interview a while back in the beginning of the process where you mentioned you and Scott had written a couple new songs for Velma that Ms. Pfeiffer got to choose from.
Whatever happened to those songs? Any details you can give on what they were about? (If they exist at all and I'm not dreaming this whole thing up.)
Was reading 'The Roots' last night and it mentioned a cut song called 'The New Girl In Town'. Is it safe enough to assume this is the same one that has made it onto the movie soundtrack? If so, has it changed much since the early days?
Does everyone know that "New Girl in Town" is STILL in the musical - as underscore?
It is! :)
When Amber talks to the "camera" about voting for her and tuning in to Mother-Daughter Day, through Brenda's "9 months" line, until Edna turns off the TV- "New Girl in Town" plays.
After the movie and people start knowing the movie music well - It will be hard not to recognize the tune.
Some of you guys are so fifties.
Thank you Marc for bringing the fun and heart back into movie musicals. I don't know who killed them, when did they jump the shark? I guess it happened some time after Little Shop. Why should movie-musicals be so serious? This film works on so many levels. I am happy the message of tolerance is still at the center and in no way weighs (no pun intended) down this film. This is THE film we have all been waiting and wishing someone would make. I hope every movie musical from this point on learns a step or two from it.
I just came back from buying the soundtrack.
But, there's no "I Can Wait."
Why is this?

At the risk of being called names, I just want to say to Marc that I love the soundtrack as much or more than the OBC recording. I didn't think that was going to be possible. I especially love the new lyrics at the end of Welcome to the 6o's. Edna sounds SO happy. I drive a whole lot of carpool and the OBC recording has provided hours of entertainment for my passengers and me. Now we get to go see the movie and listen to the new soundtrack in the car. I'm not sucking up when I say THANK YOU MARC for making driving the Mommy bus a FUN thing to do!

PLEASE don't apologize for making my day!
I would like you to video one of those Mommy bus rides!! YouTube is waiting, as am I!
totally- do it heidi!
I didn't get the WalMart CD/DVD- they were not shelved when I went there at 3am this morning. I may have to order it online- or pray copies are still there in a few days.
but guess what, I did buy a Stereo!! Welcome to the ealry 90's Matthew!!
So now I burned my iTunes purchase and blastin' that bass baby!
How come "I Can Wait" is being sold online but it's not included on the CD?
I don't want to be a stick-in-the-mud, but it seems a tad unfair.
You must mean, Welcome to the 2000's! We already left the 90's.
Also -- stereos have been around since the 1950's, so it wasn't a 90's thing.
It was an i-Tunes Preorder exclusive.
at this point I dont know if anyone else will offer it- but if I see anything- I'll post it.
I don't think that's right.
It's nice for iTunes to have exclusives, but to cut a track from the movie on the soundtrack is incredibly unfair for anyone who chose to go out and purchase it. It's not a complete soundtrack, then.
well its like boombox style- so therefore I said early 90's.
Well 'I Can Wait' is not in the movie anymore, it was cut for pacing and redundancy.
So essentially- its just a bonus track.
Hate being a pest again, but boomboxes have been around since the very early 80's. I should know -- I had a few. My first boombox with a CD player must have been around 1985.
Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between the WalMart extra DVD and the Circuit City extra DVD? I just rushed down to Circuit City and bought the CD and am now wondering if I should have gone to WalMart.
Ah, ok.
Thanks mateo.
no, I totally know!
I said early 90's- because the style LOOKS like an early 90's model boombox.
you had a cd player in '85??? wow.
Broadway Bob- I dont know. I am waiting for someone to write up what each dvds features are.
But from what I understand - they are indeed different.
I'm getting both versions, so I'll post exact info later today.
From what I heard, the Wal-Mart DVD has Nikki's 'casting' profile but behind-the-scenes stuff. The Circuit City one has Zac's "Ladie's Choice" video, cast interviews and behind-the-scenes stuff.
The good thing about the Circuit City one is that you don't have to buy the HAIRSPRAY Soundtrack to get it -- it's free with the purchase of ANY CD or DVD. Just buy it at Wal-Mart (to get their bonus DVD), then buy something else at Circuit City and get their bonus DVD 'free'.
yeah. Heidi is going to try and score me a Circuit City dvd.
The only store in my town is Walmart, but I cant get tehre for a few days. I tried to get a copy at 3 am, but no luck- the stores were not stocked.
"At the risk of being called names, I just want to say to Marc that I love the soundtrack"
WTF? Why would you care what someone else thinks because you liked it? And YOU Mr. Marc (insert middle name here) Shaiman, with my finger shaking in your face. Stay in the light! This is an amazing time for you. You should have no time for the negative. Some here actually have the ability to listen, and watch other peoples work and just plain old flat out enjoy it. It's like the old actor story of ten raves but the one pan matters. Well no, it doesn't. This can be a truly cruel world and sometimes joy is hard to find and some people are so unhappy with their lives, they just have to share it. Don't go there. You should be enjoying every minute of this and you have absolutely nothing to defend. Clear the bookshelf, you're going to need the space, come Spring.

Are you talking Oscar Amoni? I do not think the Academy will remember this by the time Oscars come around. Are you a know-it all Amoni :)
I think Amoni's talking about the new songs that were written for the movie...which are indeed nomination (if not award) worthy.
