I can’t think of a recent musical — or play, for that matter — that has done a better job at finding theatrical expression for the wayward dynamics of remembering.
SOUNDS LIKE A RAVE!!!

Beautiful beautiful review by Brantley. Kudos to the entire cast and crew. Especially nice touch to Sydney being described as "incomparable Ms. Lucas" :)
Fairly short but great review. I wish he had singled out Beth Malone more. I thought she was excellent.

But Fun Home...ends on a note of forgiveness and transcendence, with Alison recalling that "every so often," she "soared above" her circumstances. This show does, as well.

New! Fresh! Original! We toss those kudos around a lot in this business. (It’s like calling everyone “darling.&rdquo But “Fun Home” really earns the praise. Lisa Kron, who wrote both book and lyrics, assembles words and images in unexpected ways to dramatize the bittersweet memoir (based on the 2006 graphic novel by Alison Bechdel) of a grown woman remembering the troubled father she loved in spite of himself. Sam Gold’s direction brings lucidity to the complex mechanics of staging a story that takes place in three time frames. And Jeanine Tesori’s haunting music doesn’t sound a bit like anyone else’s music.

NY Daily News: Rave (5 stars)
As in the plays’s 2013 run at the Public Theater, the cast is excellent. The Alisons all shine in solo moments. Sydney Lucas, the youngest, unlocks what she’s feeling when she sings “Keys.” Emily Skeggs, the coed, embraces her sexuality with the delightful “Changing My Major.” Beth Malone surveys the dimension of her dad’s life in the wistful “Maps.”
As the bedeviled Bruce, Michael Cerveris delivers an even greater emotional payoff than before. As his long-suffering wife, Helen, the exquisite Judy Kuhn is indelible as she sings of her life with conditioned dry-eyed composure.
Be prepared to wipe away tears.

I already thought that Fun Home was the best new musical of the year in 2013, when it opened at the Public Theater. It’s hard to imagine that its Broadway transfer, and transformation, will not make it the best of this season as well.

NY Post: Positive (3 of 4)
Don’t let its perky title and the cute children in its cast fool you: “Fun Home” isn’t a show for tourists. (ouch, but I guess)
Still, “Fun Home” is an important show. That it managed to make it to Broadway at all is a reason to rejoice.

Entertainment Weekly: Positive (A-)
A little bit of nuance inevitably gets lost when subject matter this dark is set to song; death and deep family schisms, after all, aren’t always fit for jazz hands. But like the book, Fun Home manages to use an oft-unserious medium to deliver something seriously, singularly moving.

Aaaaaaaaand I think I'm done for the night.
Wonderful reviews all around - not a single negative one. Now to the TONY's!

A few assertions in that New York Post review are just absurd.
Watching the show clips reminded me of how truly special this show is- Judy Kuhn broke my heart all over again, and the nuances Sydney Lucas finds at the end of Ring of Keys are so incredibly beautiful. Thrilled about these wonderful reviews!

Indy-What bothers me about the Post review is that Vincentelli holds its non-tourist appeal against it. Can't there be room for this and shows that are more typical tourist fare? (I think so). It's also just not a well-written review.

Falling: I totally agree. And as a tourist, I resent that she paints all of us as uncouth theatregoers who can't handle more challenging fare.
For some reason it's not listed as a Brantley critics pick yet.
I feel really stupid, but can someone explain to me the spoiler that happens in Ring of Keys in the clip?
Poster here - no real spoilers for the song itself, but the video also shows a lot of the other songs in the current production, enough to potentially spoil the show for those that haven't seen it yet :)
I don't see a spoiler either, besides the song and interpretation being expertly delivered by Lucas.
ljay Fairly short but great review. I wish he had singled out Beth Malone more. I thought she was excellent.
I agree but do believe that Malone as she deserves will be nominated for a Tony!
Since I ended back here, might as well add it tonight.
Theater Mania: Rave
There's always a hint of worry when a very special off-Broadway show transfers to the big leagues of Broadway. Will it lose the magic? Does it have what it takes to survive in a celebrity-dominated industry? In the case of Fun Home, Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron's awe-inspiring musical that comes to the Circle in the Square Theatre after an acclaimed run at the Public Theater, the answers to those two questions are, respectively,"heck no" and "yes!"
In an era of jukebox musicals, there's only one thing left to say: Thank God Fun Home is on Broadway.

And the always excellent Ms. Kuhn, whose Helen is shaped by a resentment she can barely afford to express, gives full life to a lacerating 11 o’clock ballad of repressed emotions set free.
One of the best moments in a show of extreme highs.
Where are the show clips...highlights for Fun Home...don't see them?
Regarding Malone's Tony chances, how will she be placed? Cerveris and Kuhn get the above the title billing due to their being Broadway stars, but wouldn't (Adult) Alison be considered a leading role, and Helen a featured role? If Malone is put in featured she'll have to compete with her Alison counterparts, including Sydney Lucas who is basically guaranteed a nomination.
