Faith Prince - The Downfall...

How did Faith Prince go from Point A to Point Z in a matter of a short few months? Word of mouth in the beginning was that she was the one to beat this season, even beyond Patti's Rose. And then to show her up there screeching out a select few notes in a show that was nominated for almost nothing. I felt really sad for her knowing how much she worked her hooha off in this role.
And now to leave the ceremony tonight with nothing and at the bottom of the heap.
How did it happen? Was it the show (and the negative press around it) that brought poor Faith down to zero?

Posted: 6/16/08 at 3:34amThe performance did not come off well outside the context of the show. Not to mention that having Matt and Leslie dancing on a completely different stage than where Faith was singing took away from the power the number holds in the show.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 3:51amI wouldn't call Faith the "bottom of the heap" but even so - what a heap to be at the bottom of. She was in GREAT company this year and that award could have gone any number of ways. Kelli O'Hara was as deserving of the award just as much as Faith who was as deserving as Patti, etc.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 5:04amI thought that Faith Prince was wonderful, but I felt as soon as I left the theater that she didn't have a shot against Patti. In my opinion, Patti is a better actress, singer, and performer. Not to say that Faith Prince isn't- just not in Patti's league.

Did you see that monster? It was out-of-con-TROL!

Posted: 6/16/08 at 8:14amI attributed her being off-key was that she couldn't hear the orchestra.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 8:38amThe minute I walked out of A Catered Affair, I said she didn't stand a chance against LuPone. That performance was much ado about nothing.
re: Faith Prince - The Downfall...#10
Posted: 6/16/08 at 8:47amStill, she's got another career-defining role in her. And I'd sure like see HER take on Rose someday...

I *love* Faith Prince, but I thought her performance last night was awful. It sounded like she was really struggling to sing; some of her notes were sharp.
I wouldn't say that she's experiencing a "downfall." I would say she just had a bad night.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 10:02amI still think she was one of the best Miss Adelaide's ever. Love her on the 1992 cast recording!

Posted: 6/16/08 at 10:13amShe was also brilliant in NICK & NORA. Did not sound very good last night though...

-- "when the hell were people buzzing her above patti?"
They never were, in reality. Remember how, though, many have been unwilling to let Patti's win be a sure-thing for basically as long as it was known that it was a sure-thing? Well, it was in that spirit that, looking to try to force a competition where there didn't need to be one, people started "buzz" on Faith Prince winning for A Catered Affair before it opened.

The OP's question is more than a trifle melodramatic and the use of the word "downfall" is overblown.
Faith Prince is a wonderful actress, she got wonderful reviews for her performance, and she will give more wonderful performances in the future.
And WAT-- no one was "brilliant" in Nick and Nora--it was that bad.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 10:23amActually, people were buzzing her above Patti. I heard several people in our business first hand, people with big names and stellar reputations, talk about her performance being the one to beat this year back before the show arrived in NY.

I think that Faith is enjoying her time in Sacramento more then worrying about Broadway these days.
She is an amazing talent and she has had some amazing roles to play.

Let me tell you something folks. However Faith Prince ended up last night, it was way up the heap from where she was after the miserable mess called Kismet last summer in London -- when she was skewered by the critics and the show was an embarrassment to all.
I agree that the song last night makes no sense out of context to the show. It's not about a singer -- it's about a real woman who is a mother with something to say -- and she does it so well in the show, as a real person, not as a trained singer.

In response to Pal Joey's thread about my thread being a little overdramatic. Lest we forget it's theater after all.
I didn't mean it as if it was the downfall of Faith Prince in general...I meant her downfall in this show. I'm sure she's fantastic in it and everything else. I meant how did she fall so far so fast from what was supposed to be an anticipated return to Broadway?

Posted: 6/16/08 at 11:09amNothing new here. In Guys and Dolls, she often didn't sing the actual notes as written. On the Falsettos recording, she is often under pitch.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 11:17amPeople DEFINITELY were buzzing about performance being the one to beat. I won't name names, but people flat out said here "Faith Prince WILL beat Patti LuPone." And then GYPSY opened with once in a lifetime reviews and AFFAIR opened to mediocre reviews, and everything changed.
