As far as I'm concerned fake theatre kids don't exist, because pretending to be a theatre kid is the most theatre kid thing you can possibly do.
Being really into theatre is cringe. You're cringe, I'm cringe, we're all cringe, who cares? Who cares if your favourites are slightly less cringe to a disconcerting ear? To an outsider it's all equally embarrassing. Enjoy it anyway.
I grew up in South Florida in the 70s and 80s. I was a surfer kid and fell in love with Broadway after seeing the original production of PIPPIN on Broadway at age 7. I spent all my summers in NYC so I saw countless original Broadway productions/casts so it was obviously something I loved and a bit obsessed about. None of my theatre friends cared about Broadway and I accepted that and they accepted me for loving Broadway. Neither one of us judged each other. Broadway didn’t define me, it was just something I loved and embraced and I fully accepted not everyone has to like it or know it. I guess I’m one of those rare people that figured things out as a kid and embraced my own uniqueness without looking for my tribe. My tribe was anyone who vibed with me regardless of what they were into.

Great observation
It does make you wonder--
These "fake" theatre kids
Are probably very sad if they're struggling to try to fit in with the tier below Dream kids
Oh how I love the theatre
But I don't think most people know there's any difference between Hamilton and Sweeney Todd
Or Be More Chill and Mail by Michael Rupert
And by the way OP
I have also listened to Mail
It's not as obscure as you probably think it is

I don't know about inherently cringe, but for sure it's too niche to fake. I could at least visualize why someone would want to fake being something monoculture like being an NFL or Taylor Swift fan. What's the upside to faking liking theater?

I believe I said this: Fake Theatre Kids are not exactly disingenuous just inexperienced. Somebody else pointed out that that was a better word and um yeah it's a way better word. But I will say, I literally faked being a theatre kid when I was younger to fit in because I was always around theatre kids. It wasn't until I got to high school and it became lame that I got really into them.
It isn't cringe to like theatre. But some people do make everything related to performing cringe. ( I finally watched Theatre Camp this past weekend & Platt's character was a send up of those type of people).
But people love seeing a show. A couple weekends ago I saw a so-so new play locally . It had enough funny moments that I enjoyed it. Tickets were cheap - $22CAN so like $16US. The next Monday at work talking to a coworker about the weekend I told him about the play & one or two of the jokes - but I didn't give him all the spoilers. Right away he wanted to know where it was & went online & bought tickets to take his wife the next weekend. They aren't regular theatre goers, but I was enthusiastic enough that he got interested. Fast forward to the next Monday and he was raving like it was the greatest thing they had ever experienced. Suddenly he exploded "But you didn't warn me about the nudity! I took my wife to that!" Then we laughed.
It wasn't actually full nudity. The actress playing a hippy/environmentalist type was wearing a huge wig ( merkin?) over her nether regions that was played for laughs.
Point of this I think is it isn't cringe to be genuinely enthusiastic

I think that we are kind of all cringe in a way
But that story is amazing
That makes me so happy how people enjoy theatre like that
It's really sad to me how many people I know who totally reject theatre entirely
That's probably why I started this thread:
A lot of the people who I was talking about as being "fake" theatre kids have actively rejected anything actually theatre other than a tiny sliver of shows
And I guess I find that odd cause like
You wouldn't call somebody a moviegoer if they saw one movie
Or a music geek if they listened to one band
And I find it odd that people are theatre kids even if they only like one musical
I guess if I'd worded it that way in the first place, that probably would've been a lot less mean spirited
I think that theatre is so beautiful though
Ever since I was a kid I've been trying to get my dad into musicals, and the other day we went to the Waitress movie and he loved it. He especially loved Ogie and Joe
And I was really happy that he liked it so much, even if he isn't passionate about it yet
And really that's what I need to do
I need to take my friends and families to see shows
And let them appreciate it
That's how I make more theatre people.
It's the only art form that still only manages to spread by word of mouth

Huh?

I think they mean that theatre is spread more through word of mouth than movies and stuff because like when was you went and saw a musical locally because of an ad for it
Everybody goes to movie theatres after seeing ads
But most people only go to musicals when they get literally directly told about them
