The problem is that her voice is too polarizing. A lot of people find her talented from an object standpoint, but they can’t listen to her voice.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

re: Fantasia Is The New Celie In Purple

Eww.

Seriously though, how on earth is she going to learn her lines if she can't read? I never understood how she was considered a frontrunner for Dreamgirls either, since she couldn't read the script.

please don't be an ass. There are different types of illiteracy and Fantasia was functional. She could read just not well aloud or with confusing words. It’s somewhat like the different types of dyslexia. Besides that’s like real old news. She’s been getting help since she won AI.

My next point is to tell people to give her a damn chance, your not a casting agent and you don’t see what they see, let them do there job. She might surprise us.

And lastly, did anyone read the damn article. Like seriously, because NOTHING has been confirmed by anyone but E! online. And they left the issue completely open ended so this is perhaps a ton of hoopla over nothing. Calm down and be quiet until we hear news from a true reliable source.

No way would I go to this show with Fantasia in it. She screeches, not sings.

re: Fantasia Is The New Celie In Purple

I didn't care for her in American Idol, why would I ever go pay to watch her live?

I'm really questioning the choice for her as Celie. She hasn't been very successful. I know she's a household name, but it seems like most people haven't supported her thus far, why would they start now?

Oh well, I guess it could always be worse.

re: Fantasia Is The New Celie In Purple

I hope she doesn't scream throughout the whole show, like she does in every other live performance I've watched. Oh, and let's pray to god she doesn't add a "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" at the end of every freaking lyric. Does she even have a good enough range for this part?

Interesting..to say the least.

ew. i'll probably see it though.

That's just the reaction producers are hoping for.

re: Fantasia Is The New Celie In Purple

I just read the first post and didn't go through all the thread's pages.

I just think this is funny considering she was spotted at the show, and people said she was there for enjoyment and couldn't possibly be Celie.

re: Fantasia Is The New Celie In Purple

She'll definitely boost ticket sales, but only temporarily. Her acting in that Lifetime movie left a lot to be desired, so I don't really have any hope here. The other thing is, has anyone actually watched her performances? She can sing, but she's known for changing things up a lot and doing it her way. I don't see how this can be good for a lead role like Celie. Still, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. She's going to be on Oprah soon, so I wouldn't doubt that she's been cast.

re: Fantasia Is The New Celie In Purple

You people are funny.

Before De Garmo, J-Hud or Maroulis got in their shows you all panned them, too. Each proved to be way more than adequate and actually quite talented. J-Hud was coached by her director for a long time to pull off the acting.

Fanty is a real nice kid and has a lot of guts. I wish her luck and success!

re: Fantasia Is The New Celie In Purple

Fantasia was easily one of the nest people to ever appear on Idol. Unlike pretty much anyone else, she had something BEHIND the voice, she actually knew something about acting a song, and she did it well.

This could actually be really good. I can't get over how narrow-minded the people on this board are...

re: Fantasia Is The New Celie In Purple

I hate Fantastia's voice. Absolutely hate it. I think she's AWFUL.

But, if she ends up doing Celie, I might drag my ass back to the Broadway for the Nuremberg trials. I won't be able to resist.

re: Fantasia Is The New Celie In Purple

ive never seen the color purple.
ive never seen american idol.
ive never heard fantasia sing before.

just googled and found her singing "Summertime" on Am Idol. I dont know about her acting, but the girl can sing, and her voices girlish quality actually reminds me a little bit of LaChanze.

give her a chance?

re: Fantasia Is The New Celie In Purple

The Color Purple is such an amazing show, I saw it over spring break and loved it!
Half of the reason why it was so good was b/c of LaShanze(sp?)
Fantasia is going to be horrible she can not
sing or act
