Perhaps it wasn't about the money and it was about...the art?

Glory, bwayfan, queenbee - please come back with reviews!
I wish I could be there today.
It's sad how some people can't help but be rude in this thread, even on it's final day.

Sail On
Re letting go, watch the mass hari kari when GG closes. There the term would be more apt
A neighbor saw it for the second time the other day. It was a full house & the crowd loved it

Posted: 6/17/07 at 3:16pmIt sounds like another "Lestat". Foolish direction but pigheaded production teams that wouldn't make needed changes in the shows and both lost millions. Wasn't there a flop movie about a female pirate called "Cut Throat Island" with Geena Davis? Maybe the world isn't ready for female pirates.

There's something about musicals with ships in them that critics love to attack (Titanic as well). Best of luck to the rest of the cast. Hopefully we'll see you back on Broadway soon (Block in "9 to 5" / Balgord in "In the Heights"
/ Fraser "Naked Boys Singing?" (which isn't even on Broadway, but I'd thought I'd just say that since the Broadwayworld.com critic happened to think some "areas" were the best part of the show" / McCarthy in a hopeful Urinetown revival)!

Seriously, even from the last row of the dress circle, you could telll that SOMEONE working on thats how is a definate size queen. Those cod pieces could be used to make a swingset.

A workshop of Dolly Parton's 9-5 musical or something, isn't it?

Some random thought on Pirate Queen's last day:
I haven't yet seen any Pirate Queen fans making snide comments about Company closing, and I doubt there will be any sarcastic remarks from them when Grey Gardens closes later this year. (That will be a sad day for me, I'll admit it)
I honestly think Pirate Queen could have been a hit if it had been rewritten and re-workshopped after Chicago. It never would have been a favorite of critics or award shows, but if they had captured some of the power of this woman as conveyed in the "Grania She King..." novel the show would have run. Grace O'Malley's story is amazing, but to me this show just didn't convey that sense of wonder. There are enough raw materials in the score (if they brought back "Son of the Irish Seas") to make a great show, but some of those syrupy ballads would have to be thrown overboard.
I think people will be surprised at what a great CD this show is going to release. The singers, musicians and orchestrations are all first rate. I'll admit that I will be skipping over "Pirate Queen" "My Grace" and several others, but I look forward to cranking up "I'll Be There" and "Woman".

Well I'm prolly one of the few who actually liked the show and all of it's 'girl power', but the downer for me was the acting. Sure, there were some REALLY good acting (Stephanie J. Block & Linda Balgord are the top two) but everything else I loved. I think the story is amazing (and as a h istory lover myself, I love it even more), the music I thought was great (skip over a number or two) and the ensemble numbers were very entertaining. I will also buy the CD (July 3rd -- yeay)!!
I shall miss Pirate Queen....it was a story worth telling!!
