Which Comden and Green musical is you're favorite?
Mine would have to be ON THE TOWN. I did it two summers ago and I think the story and music is their best collaboration. I also think it is one of Bernstein's best scores. If you purchase the original studio recording with the New York Philharmonic playing the score...it's unbelievable.
I would love to see a Broadway revival of this show within the next few years. It's one of those storylines that works and evolves with the time. I think it's a terribly funny script and, with the right cast and production team, I think it could have a very healthy run.

Mine would be Will Rogers Follies; I realize it isn't in the "vintage" Comden and Green category, but I don't care.
I love their work on this show.
Did you read Betty's book, "On Stage"?...it gave some insight the working of Comden and Green, but not enough.

Comden, yes..
Green, no. But Green's daughter Amanda is working in the biz.

Posted: 9/20/05 at 4:14pmTough question! I've always been a huge Comden and Green fan! I would have to say my favorite is WONDERFUL TOWN, with ON THE TOWN being a close second. I also love BELLS ARE RINGING, TWO ON THE AISLE, DO-RE-MI... pretty much ALL of their shows! Heck, even FADE OUT-FADE IN, SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING and HALLELUJAH, BABY! all have pretty strong lyrics!

Remember, they only wrote about half the lyrics for PETER PAN.
Lyrically speaking, I love ON THE TOWN & ON THE 20TH CENTURY. As period pieces go, BELLS ARE RINGING and WONDERFUL TOWN don't hold up so well after all this time.

Here's a question for all of you. How many think a revival of ON THE TOWN would be a success?
I know there was one in the early nineties...but I really think a revival, within the next few years, could be a hit with the right cast and production team.
I don't know who I would like to see cast off hand...but I have ALWAYS thought that Meghan Mullally would make an incredible Hildy.

As much as I love the show, I don't think an On the Town revival would be a success any time soon. As has already been said, there was a revival less than ten years ago (the production transferred from the Delacorte in the Park to the Gershwin and barely cleared two months) and was a total flop. Plus, the recent revival of Wonderful Town, though critically lauded, also flopped.
Sorry, but I don't think we'll see a revival any time in the near future.
